Over the years, I wonder how many Abby pickups ended up in the trash. With Dimarzio and Seymour Duncan replacement pickup craze, and the "boutique" manufacturers, I'm assumming thousands of Abby Pickups were "unknowingly" thrown away. Little did we know....

You should start a poll to see how many people throw away perfectly good pickups instead of selling, trading or giving them away. I bet not very many. :?

I would assume that if you had a set of Abby pickup you know what you had and would never through them away.

Explain what's so special about these pickups if everyone threw them away. (by your logic, I guess)

Well back in the day before e-mail, you tube and social media many guitars with stock pup's were swapped out with Duncans and DiMarzio's. Stock pup's, including Gibson and Fender pickups were not highly collectable or even worth much on a trade in. There was not much of a demand for used stock pickups. Over the years, the market has changed, and people's views have changed towards the stock pickups. I'm assuming that lots of Abby pickups may have unknowingly thrown away for aftermarket pickups. IMHO.

I agree, not many at all. I have a pretty good variety in my stash including a couple from wonderful friends on this forum!

I didn't even throw away an old pickup that didn't work. A few years ago I finally got around to rewinding that mid-70s pickup.

You wouldn't know who wound those 70s pickups. They used to encode the person who operated the winding machine. Apparently Abby had a couple of different code numbers over those years, but there's no record to know who wound what. Bummer.

"Abby pickups in the trash" sounds like a third verse to "Hello Ruby in the sand".

/strum
Yep, it works.

First off, who throws pickups in the trash?
And secondly, who would throw pickups in the trash?

I dunno......

I've seen ignorant clowns leave perfectly good gear at the curb for the garbage collectors to pick up.

Personally, I save anything usable for eventual recycling -- even used vintage grille cloth and Tolex.

I've been led to believe that I have Abby pick-ups in my 2011 FSR Am. Vtg. Ltd. Ed. '57 Stratocaster... according to the Sales Literature denoting custom made pick-ups, as well as the owner (and Vintage Collector/Seller) of the store I bought it.

If true, these would be some of the last she made as she retired 10 mos. after it was produced.

So how does one determine whether these were made by Abby or not ?? Is there some identifying in-house number or stamp?

cheers!

Ms Ybarra frequently inked her initials on the bottom of the pickups she wound. Have you opened up your guitar to check the bobbins for an "AY"?

    Like this?

It's from my 2010 FSR American Standard with C69s. I recall reading a post on this forum stating that pickups bearing Abby's signature are the ones she wound herself and those bearing her initials are the ones where for which she supervised someone else who did the winding. Now I'm not sure if this is true or not but throw these pups away? ... No way.

    Cheers!
