I saw some kids gigging last night with huge Marshall heads and 4X12 in a tiny space and the hum (no notes being played) was ridiculously loud. I'm not even going to tell you about what it sounded like when they put pick to strings. I mean the high gain "hum" when the amps were at idle was enough to cause hearing damage.

I read sheet music only with difficulty but I've yet to see the symbols for "hum" or "hiss" on a musical score. Perhaps some stylized icons for use on a chart are in order -- say, a bumblebee and a cobra.

There is "Strep." over the notes, though, which means "with noise".
