Mrs. LMN arranged for my family in Columbus (90 y.o. mother, 2 sisters - and families) to see the final round of the Presidents Cup this past Sunday. We had a table inside the Memorial Club on the 16th Fairway between the 16th and 17th holes. Despite the weather, we had a great day together and saw some of the World's best players compete.

We stayed through yesterday so we could visit as we don't get there often. Went to dinner on Monday and Tuesday. Tuesday, the girls decided to do some spa and shopping. Instead, my 2 bros-in-law and I decided to do some pub hopping in the high north area right by the OSU Campus. Passed a small music store in the area and I urged them to come inside. The store had some great guitars... which I just had to try.

Anyway, neither of them play, and after about 15 min., they got bored and said to meet them at the pub across the street. An hour later, I was talking with the owner about the Telecaster I'd been playing when they came back in. The owner instantly recognized my Bro-in-law Errol, an Oncologist. Turned out that 8 years ago, Errol performed surgery on him and pulled him back from the brink of Stage 4 cancer. Errol introduced me as his Bro-in-law and the owner said, pointing to Errol: "This guy saved my life ! If you want that guitar, I'll give it to you for my price..."

Well, his price was $168 less than the dinner tab I picked up the night before (10 people) - I mean silly inexpensive - too good to pass up. So I told Errol: "Dinner's on you tonight Bud !", then turned to the owner and said "I'll take it..."

The owner changed the strings, did a setup and had it ready for me when we returned 2 hrs. later.

It is a 2013 Fender FSR Custom Telecaster HH w/ EMG active Pickups. It has a 22-fret Mahogany set neck w/ Ivory bound Rosewood Fretboard w/ MOP inlays, a 15¾" radius and med jumbo frets, a string-thru body of solid Mahogany w/ carved, Ivory bound top and a 6-saddle hardtail bridge, all in gloss black. It is a 'modern' Telecaster body w/ Belly Cut.

Image

Electronics include an EMG 85 humbucker neck pickup and an EMG 81 humbucker pickup in the bridge, plus a 3-way switch, Master volume, Master Tone. It plays great clean and also crunches and distorts very well.

With it's set neck, Mahogany body/neck, dual humbuckers, 15¾" radius and 26+" scale length, it is much more LP-like than Tele-like. In fact I played it and an LP Special both through a '65 re-issue Twin Reverb and they were much more similar than another Tele I played for comparison. But, compared to an LP, this Telecaster is easier to play and just has a more familiar feel to it. At just under 10 lbs., it's no lightweight, but it's very balanced and isn't bad at all.

I realize the Indonesian instruments aren't the highest in Fender's pecking order, but this one plays great, has terrific fit & finish, and quality components. Perhaps because it's an FSR Custom, I don't know, but it's as nice as any MIM I've handled - for a LOT less $$.

We were able to pack it carefully inside one of two cargo containers Mrs. LMN's company was sending back to the Twin Cities (on our flight), so I didn't have to wait or worry about shipping.

I think it compliments my Heritage H-535 very nicely too !!

Very nice Lightning. Not your daddies Tele, is it! :)
Are you sure the scale length isn't 24 3/4"? That's what my JA90 Tele is, which is also a set neck and made in Indonesia. The fit and finish on mine was excellent but I found the pots to be very cheap and changed them out. I also had to have a new nut put on. It gets the most play time of all my guitars.

Dunno about the scale length... was citing from memory, but I do know it was definitely non-Tele... I'll have to re-check.

But, it feels great, plays great and is very different from my other Telecasters.

Not better, or worse, just different... in a good sort of way !

I don't think I've got any duplication going on between any of these guitars, each differs from the other significantly, including the Tone(s).

cheers!

Thanks ! :D

Well... Actually... it's funny you should ask...

Mrs. LMN's company runs all the major golf tournaments in the country. She is senior VP and personally does all the FedEx Cup events, plus 5 of the last 6 Presidents Cups. Her company does 56 major tournaments a year incl. LPGA, Senior Tour, USGA and PGA events. They also do some Tennis events, the Volvo Yacht races and the Indy Grand Prix of Alabama at Barber Motorsport Park in Birmingham.

Mrs. LMN does all the big ones and her 6 assistants do the minor ones. Basically, if you see Tiger Woods on TV playing golf, my wife is there.

The Streaker is named Kim Webster, a local girl who was hired by my wife's co. as a temporary worker for the event. The company usually sends their own employees - waiters, bartenders, chefs, concessions workers, runners, location managers, etc. and had more than 90 employees at this event. But, it is so large that they needed to hire an additional 50 temporary workers as well, in addition to more than 200 local volunteers.

I actually met Kim (fully clothed) several hours before the incident when my wife introduced her to me. Anyway, at the time it happened, Mrs. LMN was taking a break and sitting with the family in the Memorial Club. The location manager Laura, stopped by our table and pulled my wife aside. She told her what happened, and then said Kim had been talking about doing it all weekend, but that no one took her seriously. Her job was temporary, with Sunday being her last day, so she wasn't risking much.

Later, the Dublin, OH cop who caught Kim hiding in the woods afterward came into the Memorial Club to retrieve Kim's purse and other belongings. He sat with us and told us what happened.

Fortunately for Kim, she was wearing pasties and a 'G' String covering up all her girlie bits, so she was simply cited for disturbing the peace/disorderly conduct (a misdemeanor) and removed from the Course - $150 Fine.

Had she been totally naked, she would have been charged with Lewd and Lascivious Conduct and Public Nudity - both Felonies in Ohio.

Everyone had a good laugh about it in a whaddayagonnado sort of way.

As early as Monday morning, several of the local Rock stations had arranged on-air interviews w/ Kim. It was pretty funny.

cheers!
