My buddy has a 1970s 100w Marshall JMP through a 4x12 cabinet that I played through at practice with my MIM Strat with Don Mare handwound pickups and Callaham bridge assembly. And holy moley did that sound great!!!

Got a Hot Rod Deluxe with 2x12s at home and there's just no comparison.

Now I've got a bad case of newampitis...

I'm hearing that the JCM800 is very similar to the JMP. Any thoughts on which is preferable?

Also not sure if I want a 50 or 100 watt model. Can anyone explain to me the benefits/drawbacks between a 50 watt vs. 100 watt Marshall.

Gotta start saving my ducats...

hi , i've had a jcm800 100w head for 20 years or so and it's been a fantastic amp , the great thing about them is the master volume , you can get great marshall crunch at lowish volumes , check one out , cheers

A JMP, huh? Something like what's hiding behind the doubleneck. To answer your question, I believe the 800's were the same, at least for the first bunch of years of their run, so no preference.

Marshalls are in a league of their own.

If you dig the sound (and the punch of course) hurry up with saving your ducats.

The chest-kicking grunt of a Marshall may be unsubtle but it is impressive. Going from a Hot Rod Deluxe with 6L6 tubes to an untamed beast with EL34's can be quite a shock. Not least to your neighbours.

Personally I prefer the 50 Watt models, they are still frighteningly loud but with the advantage that you can push the power amp harder without recking everyone's hearing quite so badly. Unless you're doing stadium gigs there's not that much need for a 100 Watt amp.

My old JMP is running the American set up of 6550 power tubes.

If I pull out two tubes, it is just 50 watts ...

Yes indeed, time to start saving them ducats because it's going to take a long time.

Thanks everyone for the advice. Much appreciated.

For now, an early model 50-watt JCM800 is sounding like the ticket.

Probably don't need the full 100 watts and musn't give the neighbors too much of a shock once I finally save up enough to get a head and a cabinet.

Saving up that much will give me plenty of time to think, learn and ask questions...

Haven't heard as good things about the JCM900, which is probably why they're going for so much less on the used market.
