So I was part of a covers band with some guys in work and was having problems in getting people to commit to some kind of regular practice schedule. We hadn't played in months and when I suggested we get together in a couple of weeks time only one person could commit. It always seemed like the bass player would never be available despite saying he wanted to be in the band. After this I told them all that I was giving up on trying to arrange everything and nobody showing any interest.

I put an ad on a local musician's site. I basically put up the most honest ad you will ever see. I said i was an intermediate level rhythm Guitar who is 42 years old looking for like minded musicians in my area. I said that I'm not out to make any money on this and it was all about the love of playing live. I listed out all the bands I liked and who influenced me. That same day i was contacted by a drummer who also had his own PA system. A couple of days later a Guitarist got in touch and then a couple of days later I was contacted by a female singer. I was able to recruit the singer of my old work band to play bass and another ex work colleague for keyboards. This was all inside two weeks. A six piece band.

We met up in my house on the 29th of September. We agreed we would play covers initially but not the obvious ones that everyone else seemed to play. We picked three songs to play and then We had a 2 hour practice in my house on the 3rd which went well. Last night we had our first practice in a local recording studio I found on Facebook. It has the most incredible gear. I had a choice of a Marshall JCM 2000 or a Vox AC30.

I'm the one with the Jazzmaster. The songs we have at the moment are:

Mary Jane's Last Dance - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
Run - Snow Patrol
How Soon is Now? - The Smiths
Give Me a Reason - Tracey Chapman
Zepher Song - Red Hot Chilli Peppers
Behind Blue Eyes - The Who

It's great to be in a band with people who are as enthusiastic as me. We are exchanging ideas via texts and emails constantly. We're using Dropbox to put up videos, songs and ideas as well as some videos and audio we shoot at practice.

It's all good!

I wish I had a practice space that big.

Good luck with your new endeavors. 8)

That is a great studio, I imagine that whoever lays claim to that has a secure spot in the group!

Good luck with your band. The drummer and I in our band have been playing together for 22 years now, but still pains every now and than, commitment to gigs is our biggest issue.

That's the way to do it! Nothing happens if you don't put yourself out there. I put up a page on Bandmix and have had similar experience. I've been playing and meeting all kinds of new people the last two months and I have an audition for a new band next week. It beats sitting in the bedroom playing the same songs over and over. Good luck with the new band!

Hey, not everybody is social, and some actually prefer not to meet new people. Nothing wrong with that - some of the best musicians in the world are or were introverts or people shy. Syd Barrett, Mike Oldfield, Gary Numan...

If going out works for you, great! But it doesn't necessarily beat sitting in the bedroom for everyone.

Wow! We do not have rehearsal studios like that here in NY (or at least not that I'm aware of). Sorry to say if we did, it would probably be trashed in under a month. The studios I go to are dimly lit, smell like an ashtray someone took a 'pee' on, and the ancient equipment is held together with tape, drums aren't tuned, mics are dented, etc. :?

The band looks great, be sure to record your first show! :D

I used to consider myself antisocial. Nothing wrong with being an introvert. But, if you want to make music with other people than you have to push yourself past that, which is what I'm doing. It sounded like Torresfan wanted to be in a group, so I was giving him some positive reinforcement. Every time I'm on my way to play at a new place or with new people, I get drenched with apprehension. Believe me, I'm no A type personality.

Awesome! You are doing exactly what I am trying to do.

Really extra cool getting a keys player (who can really play?). That can really let you create some music that sounds better than a lot of guys making noise at small bar type gigs, IMO.

Dude I'd be happy to find a singer and drummer. One problem is I've tried to recruit people who are not motivated as you say--who never thought about joining a band (but all girls think they can sing). Like how Jack White taught his ex wife to play drums (arguably).

I guess I need to get on find your band dot com or whatever the website is.

The keyboard player also plays guitar and harmonica. Great for Mary Jane's Last Dance. :)

Thanks, and this kind of thing frustrates me. There are so many of these things...which one actually works? This is already the 2nd one mentioned in this thread. band friend. the other is band mix. then there's form my band etc etc

how do we know which ones actually work and have paid members on the other side of the line to meet?

it's like with dating sites other than match....all the competitors...very few people actually become paid members who can send and receive messages.

you're saying this band friend app thing works?

i do have an iPhone!

I've been playing with it, completed my profile. Searching turned up some people near me, but not right in my county. I think (as you stated) more people need to join to make it cool, but it seems you don't need to pay anything to place ads and communicate. I have to check out the others you mentioned.
