Bad connection, high resistance joint somewhere would explain a high resistance but not the change. I would clean the connections good and try again.

My bet is on a bad meter. Why? Because if both speakers were truly "8 ohm" speakers, you would not get a reading of 8.4 ohms on the other speaker. The voice coil resistance (which is all you are measuring) would be around 7 ohms or slightly less. Of course, there could be something wrong with the other speaker, but the meter is definitely not reading correctly.

Does the other speaker's value bounce around like that?

Have you tried to put any sounds through it?

It would be interesting to see what happens after you break in that new reconing.
