John Mayall and Sonny Landreth were amazing at the Iridium Jazz Club in NYC last Friday.
Sonny was using a Hrd DeVille and he didn't sound as sweet as he did when I last saw him when he was using his Twin and Dumble, but still a great performance. John was using a Roland Jazz Chorus. Not sure if this was just house gear or rented stuff or his regular rig. John's guitar looked a little like a Strat that had some of the body modified and he had all kinds of mods done to it.
Here's a few Photos I'll Add More. The site only lets me post two at a time. Sorry about the quality, Photobucket really messes with the quality and color.

I found it by accident. I was going to NY C for the weekend so I just figured I'll see what's at the Iridium. Glad I did.

That Mayall guitar looks wild!

I'm glad you had a great time, and I'm sure it was a helluva show! :)

But after you announced you were going to see them, it struck me that they really have never been paired musically. :?:

In fact, I'm not aware of any performance they ever did together in the past.

Don't get me wrong, I am a HUGE Sonny Landreth Fan. Have seen him live literally dozens of times through the years in and around New Orleans (4 times this year alone), and have met him on numerous occasions.

And, while he may well be a 'friend', I would have expected any Bill calling for John Mayall & Friends to include at least one or more of the following: Bernie Watson, Roger Dean, Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Mick Taylor, Jon Mark, Randy Resnick, Harvey Mandel, Ross Appleman, James Quill Smith, Kal David, Walter Trout (who I just saw a month ago), Coco Montoya, Buddy Whittington, or Simon Bateman - At least these guys actually played with Sir John in the past.

Sounds like a pairing put together by the Managers or Promoters.

Still... I bet it was an amazing night !

Cool photos too !! :D

cheers!

That's one venue I'll miss NYC for.

Lightnin, I thought the same thing. It was a weird pairing. John Mayall's guitarist was Rocky Athas, I believe he's from Texas. Good guitarist, but it seemed Sonny was just in the background and didn't solo much. It was Mayall's show for sure. I was hoping Mick Taylor or Peter Green would show up, but nothing. It was still a great show nonetheless. I don't think Sonny and John really knew each others music that well. Sonny was playing out of a HRD DeVille. The magic in his tone just wasn't there. Rocky was playing out of a HRDlx and it was pointed at me and was like a pickaxe right between the eyes. No magic tone there from either of them. I'm not trying to start a HRD tone debate or discussion. It was what it was. Sorry, and I don't mean to offend anyone who owns either of these amps. It was still a great show and I was thrilled to see yet another living legend in action.
