I would love to take the American Special Jazzmaster for a test drive and hear how the humbuckers sound. The AVRI Jazzmaster neck pickup is my favorite pickup of ANY guitar, so I'm skeptical about the humbucker there. How can you improve on perfection? And I don't like the neck humbucker on the Lee Ranaldo. However, I really like the humbucker in the bridge position of the Lee Renaldo.

Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised and like both pickups when I try it. If not, I wonder if it would be easy for me to replace the neck pickup with an AVRI, since the humbuckers on this are made to look like vintage Jazzmaster pickups?

I like the fact that the neck radius is 9.5". I have trouble playing the round 7.25" neck radius of the older Fenders, including my Jazzmasters.

And I like the fact that the jazz circuit was removed.

I just hope I can find a store in the Denver area that will carry them so I can try it. If I do, I'll report back!

I'd be happier with the Clapton neck available on everything.

That is funny Doc  . I know I've read your description before but, what features of the Clapton necks do you like?

The overall design of the neck carve fits my hand better than anything else in the line. It' really a matter of individual comfort. Putting it simply...it just feels right. There are many players out there who are of the same mind.

The guitar's neck is 42mm at the nut. The AmStd's is 42.8 as is that of the Dlx V-neck. Beyond that Fender doesn't supply any further specs thus, not having a micrometer caliper, I can't give you any further specs such as thickness at the first and twelfth frets and width at the same position. The shape of the neck is described as a 'special soft V', whereas the Dlx is described simply as a soft V, and the Standard as the' modern C with rolled shoulders'. The Clapton does not have a pronounced spine but has an obvious taper to it. It feels more slender, sleek and less intrusive compared to the other two. It was patterned after that on a favorite Martin acoustic of his. They've discontinued the '57VHR which has a modified soft-V...a tad flatter on the spine than their conventional. If you can find a dealer who still has one, it worth a check on the difference in feel Being consistent with my recommendations in these matters in these pages over the years, you really have to play one to know.
