I've had two video's disabled by YouTube in the last two days. Both had been up for a considerable amount of time. One was video of my band doing a cover of a Prince song and I put in the title "Let's Go Crazy Cover". I thought this was what you needed to do to not go afoul of the law. I have lots of other video's up that are labeled the same way. So what's the deal, can you not post a video of you doing a cover of a song? I wasn't collecting any money and didn't get paid for any advertising. I don't see how my video could take any money out of Prince's pocket.
Here is the email that they sent me:

We have disabled the following material as a result of a third-party notification from Controversy Music claiming that this material is infringing:

Let's Go Crazy Cover By All I Need

Please Note: Repeat incidents of copyright infringement will result in the deletion of your account and all videos uploaded to that account. In order to prevent this from happening, please delete any videos to which you do not own the rights, and refrain from uploading additional videos that infringe on the copyrights of others. For more information about YouTube's copyright policy, please read the Copyright Tips guide.

If one of your postings has been misidentified as infringing, you may submit a counter-notification. Information about this process is in our Help Center.

Please note that under Section 512(f) of the Copyright Act, any person who knowingly materially misrepresents that material was disabled due to mistake or misidentification may be liable for damages.

Sincerely,

— The YouTube Team

I don't think it's Prince per se, the other video was a Pink Floyd song. I'm wondering how you can post a cover of a song on YouTube and not be in violation. If they remove all covers, they'd probably lose 50% of their content. I'm trying to decide if I should take down all of my other cover video's or risk getting my account closed.

The enforcement does seem arbitrary.

Most likely You Tube only does that when the copyright holder complains. It's no different than copying a Fender headstock.

Hi, Drew !
I experienced similar problems some months ago . I had personally filmed a band that were covering Pink Floyd in a big scale. That means , in that particular occasion , they had 1200 spectators times 4 concerts . I am pretty sure that they had the necessary permissions of doing that. So, I also linked the video to that bands webpage.
After getting a pretty good amount of views , I suddenly received a letter from the Youtube- team ,accusing me for copyright infringement . I understood that I had an option of complaining to that accusation . I also understood that it was an option to keep the vids , but accept that they were used in connection with advertising . I tried to dig deeper into their rules , and discovered that they used some computers to run through vids/titles to discover any copyright infringement.

All in all I found that rules so complicated , so I just deleted the vids . And I was also thinking about all those covers out there .... someone will have to stand up, and find a way to deal with that . I am afraid that every cover will be haunted after some time......

The funny thing , i got one or two threats on behalf of Pink Floyd , and one on behalf of John Lennon . That shows that all this is done by computers . Lennon also has a song called 'Mother' , as do Pink Floyd . Sorry I didn't have any good advice , but I'm looking forward to more posts here

Andy youtube have deleted videos from my public channel. All of the vids on MrSolarcoaster channel have been favorited from other channels. The few that I have uploaded are ones that I put together with out using recognizable titles.

Titles aren't the only thing they're looking for. The second video that I had muted but not taken down was from inside of a race car and I used a Pink Floyd track as background to the cars racing at CA Speedway. So they matched content in the video without any mention of the music in the title.
I'm not trying to be a copyright pirate. I actually thought that a cover of a song if you marked it as such and didn't try to commercialize it, was okay. As I mentioned, if they went through and deleted every cover song and every video of a band doing a song in a bar, and of every video lesson on how to play a song, they'd have a lot of empty servers.

Hey Drew!

I'm with you on this one. I have had two videos removed by YT, both of which had been up for years and, as yours were, labeled specifically as covers. I think the best thing you can do is not spell the name right and not mention the original artist. YT told me that if it happens again, they will shut down my channel - whoop-de-doo! I've got about 25-30 songs still up, ALL of them covers and so labeled. No matter what happens, I will live.

YT is full of covers! if they do that to everyone doing a cover then they'll need to shut it down!

Farcical that's the only word for it!

Was the video of your band doing it at a paid gig? That's the only way I could imagine Prince's people could care. Another thing to notice is that, in the absence of a complaint, youtube only picks up potential violations when the audio matches the real song...so take that as a compliment.

Otherwise, youtube was wrong. Youtube's own rules on monetization prove as much. You are allowed to monetize only on original songs, not covers. This rule implies that one CAN post covers, just not monetize them.

When are they going to shut down boob girl? She does nothing but covers.

No, she just gets billions of views. This is one of many examples of female privilege in our society, contrary to what the Cathedral will try to teach you.

Copyright infringement enforcement of this type is entirely arbitrary and ad hoc.

A very well known online guitar teacher (two of them actually) have never had any of their tutes pulled, or warned by YT. Yet one of them (but not the other, who still has some of the same songs up there) has had cease and desists from lawyers of Dylan, GnR and others, for posting YT tutorials, mirrored on his website - some of which are beginners versions and not even 'faithful' reproductions.

He gets the idea that the artists concerned aren't even aware of this, and its driven by the publishers lawyers.

I'd take that bet too.

"If it weren't for lawyers, we wouldn't need lawyers."
