Has anyone recorded a jam with an iPhone? I'd like to try it the next time we jam.
Currently I could use the video camera, voice recorder or the Soundcloud app.
Is one thing better than the other? Will it be all distorted if we play too loud?
I assume placement will be key.

I absolutely love an app called DropVox (Free).

Link: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/dropvox ... 88287?mt=8

When you press the big Record button, it records. When you press the Stop button, the app automatically uploads the file to your Dropbox account. You don't have to wait for the upload to start the next recording. It's perfect for what I use it for.

After the rehearsal, just go home, all the files will be waiting for you on your computer.

I don't know the impact on your data plan as I use a Verizon Jetpack (hotspot) along with the app. But if it doesn't eat up too much data, it's definitely a winner of an app.

to me, it sounds as good as my old digital hand-held recorder which I thought sounded pretty good. My main complaint with most of these recorders is they tend to lean towards being more 'bassy' in the EQ. What I want is the flattest sound possible. It does that pretty well...

I used to think iPhone recorded in good sound quality until i got my Zoom Q3 recorder with 2 condenser mics in X/Y configuration. There is no comparison and the Zoom records a ton of bass (without clipping) such that the iPhone basically records ZERO low end by comparison.

I have iPhone 5 BTW.

iPhone has been famous for years, going back to old models, for being able to record loud concerts for youtube without clipping, which it can do and create "good quality" audio by youtube concert standards....but IMO again the Zoom with 2 condenser mics beats iPhone by a very very very wide margin and also records in true stereo such that for band practice, you put it in the middle of the room the recording really does sound almost pro quality in that the drums will be a little to the left, guitar a little to the right, etc....it's in stereo and sounds great thru good headphones.

Also they are like $180....totally worth it IMO for recording live band practice stuff.

Well I'd jam with you if we were in same city and could use mine.

Ya... I'm a beginner player not in a band and even for my amateur recording for my youtube channel purposes, the difference is so much that I would not post a vid recorded with iPhone because it's not fair to my playing to the extent my playing is anything at all...again...no bass recorded with the iphone and NO STEREO since it's one mic. I have a little system where I use a keyboard for drums and it's on the other side of the room from my guitar amp and the Zoom in the middle makes stereo recordings like I mentioned.

(disclaimer: if anyone goes to my youtube channel some of my OLD stuff was done with cheap camera phone before I got zoom recorder).

(also took me a while to figure out to turn off the down adjust thing that would cause huge volume drop if it got too loud in the real room....better to let it not compress)

That looks interesting. I use a similiar app on my 4S:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/retro-r ... 55229?mt=8

..and then use AudioShare to send it anywhere.

I've had it in a shirt pocket at 'live' shows and it does a reasonably well job of recording.

edit - that DropVox app ain't free anymore.

If you have it on an iPad, it's a free download for iPhone.

I tried out 2 locations for recording our last jam.
The guitars and bass amp sit along a wall opposite the drums. I placed the phone behind the amp line next to my amp. It sounds ok, a bit distorted from my amp being so close, but great when my leads kick in!
After our break, I moved it across the room and it gave a better recording. Obvioulsy not a demo recording by any means, but it gives me enough to see how we sounded.
