hi , been using marshall heads and 4x12 cabs or a good few decades now , bomb proof would describe them to a T , and vox amps (valve) ain't too bad either ,
At the moment i'm using my old jcm 800 from 1981 which i've had for around 20 years with no problems and also a vox ac15c1 i picked up a few years ago , cracking wee amp , but saving for an old ac 30 ( i might even lighten my collection a bit to get one , hope this helps) and don't forget to get some ear plugs if you go for either  , cheers

I know Marshalls may be used more for hard rock and heavy metal,...but wondering how a Marshall such as the DSL40C would do for country or blues? I'd like to be able to compare it to my HRD III amp in terms of sound, etc. I have also discovered that the speaker in the DSL40C and the speaker in my HRD III are very similar. My HRD III has a G12-P80(or 80P,...anyway) and the DSL40C has a Seventy80,...both made by Celestion.

hi , i mainly play blues and classic rock and about the heaviest sound i need is for some hendrix tunes for which i use an old arbiter fuzz face to push the amp hard , but even with the FF if you turn a strat down to around 7 or 8 it cleans up nicely , but thats with my old 800 , they probably make more high gain amps (jcm900) and newer varients , but as with all amps the gain dial is handy for clean sounds 8) , i just use my volume on the guitar , cheers
Alan

The question is "what kind of sound do you want ?" (and of course the price ).

If you want the legendary "english" sound , you need a good Vox. The sound is unique , wild and very british in drive.

The Marshall sound is different for each decade. The early marshall has a sound inspired by the Fender Tweed amps (especially the Bassman) with warm clean and very punchy bluesy-rock drive sound. I owned a 1974x and it's perfect for blues and AC/DC (Bon Scott period)
For Marshall , the Jcm-800 is a miles stone. The sound is more powerfull , perfect for hard-rock and old metal/punk .
Modern Marshall amps are very polyvalent with high gain section perfect for modern metal, but i think (just my two cents) they are less of soul. Very commercial stuff.

(sory for my bad English  )

Edit : if you play country , blues and rock , the best choice is a Deluxe reverb or Twin Reverb

currenntly i have a 1980 twin reverb and a ac30 cc2. id say the twin is better clean and has a better reverb but the vox does have its own unique sound. ive played through a couple of peaveys at a friends house and i can tell you a peavey backstage can go with the best of them for volume andsounds.

but i have owned alot of vox amps a old cambridge reverb was real nice then newer ones not so god. an old pacemaker real nice newer one not good at all. i also had a kensington bass amp from vox also an older ad 120 vt one of the blue cloth emulator vox amps the was out early in that series. and a royal guardsman. those were very nice too. never played through any of the small fender amps. owning a twin reverb pretty much anything smaller is not gonna get me that same sound. vox is now owned by korg. if i were to want one more amp i would want a marshall bluesbreaker like clapton used to have. but i think you got to take out a morgage for one of those now

Been there, no fun. I've learned proper procedures for poking around my amps.

I have two VOX amps (AC30 and Valvetronics) and like the both. My Son uses the Valetronice most times and I use one of my Rolands around the house mostly. I also use VOX vintage coil cables a lot of the time.
