I may lean more towards Fender in my choice of gear,...but I am wondering,...mainly out of curiosity,...if anyone has had experience with British amps made by Marshall,Black Star,or Vox.

While checking out the new Fender Champion amps this past weekend,I also had a chance
to listen to a Marshall and a Black Star amp,...both low wattage tube jobs. The Marshall was a 15 watt DSL15 and the Black Star was just a little 5 watt combo(didn't get the model number,...sorry). Name brand wise I am not as familiar with Black Star as I am Marshall or Vox.

The Marshall seemed to be of much better quality as far as tone is concerned and it's build quality compared to any of the Black Star amps seemed much better. The DSL15 Marshall seemed to have a pretty nice clean tone and doesn't sound as boxy as the Black Star or even a Blues Jr. for that matter. I would not mind having a British made amp along with my
Fender HRD III amp. Not sure about Vox amps,...but have heard a demo on youtube,...not sure I would like them or not, though. I love tube amps,...so I have decided to stay with tubes. What about the overall reliability of these amps? Black Star has a larger Studio 20 I think they call it,and Vox has their AC15! Price wise, the Vox seems most expensive than the other two. :)

i had a marshall jcm800 50 watt head and cab and i own a vox ac30c2. loved the marshall and love the ac30c2. both are loud as hell but sound good. as for the marshall well....it's a marshall. the vox can be a dark brit amp but with a few tone and drive adjustmants can be quite chimey and beautiful. very touch sensitive because of the el84 tubes. the ac15 tends to have less headroom than the ac30 because of the output wattage. the ac15"twin" is killer though, it was a John Lennon idea. now fender and vox are all i play.

If I can ever get up enough money for a new tube power amp and a nice speaker cabinet, I've got this waiting in the wings:

It sounds great, clean and distorted.

I owned one of these .. great pre-amp for sure.

Vox AC 30 top boost was one of my first amps back in 1977. In combo with the Ibanez tube screamer it was a very versatile amp.

I bought a new 100-watt Super Lead Plexi in 1973 and used it for about a year and a half. It was nice amp, trouble-free, and sounded great through a pair of Sunn 412S cabs. But I grew tired of lugging it all around (I was roadie-less at the time) so I came back to a Fender Twin Reverb.

I played a 2x12 50 watt combo for a number of years in the mid to late 70s and liked the tone with a Les Paul I had, but once I switched to a Strat, I was ho-hum about the tone with it.

I replaced it with a 2x10 Rivera Era Concert (which I still have)and never looked back again. Now that I have a BFSR, you would have a hard time getting me to play anything other than a Fender.

FWIW

I sold a Fender Twin way back when and became a Marshall man.
It's not a high gain affair, but I love the way they roar.

Aye, there is that.

Among stacks, Marshalls have no peer.

I have to admit that I do have one non-Marshall amp. It's an Epiphone Valve Junior I got in order to practice working on tube amps (I wouldn't want to mess up a valuable old Marshall ). It actually sounds pretty good cranked through a Marshall cabinet.

Hey KC9SYJ,

you may also have a look at HIWATT.

Very interesting amps, kind of a Marshall 'urge' and power, but unmistakeably has that Britt amp flavor.

Just a thought :)

Dewey, "mainly out of curiosity,...if anyone has had experience with British amps made by Marshall,Black Star,or Vox.", yes indeed my Marshall Bass stack was brutally loud, no wonder so many had to wear ear plugs standing in front of those night after night and my Vox Westminster bass cabinet (18" Celestion) shook the stage with a 100 watt Kustom bass head. Does that help your curiosity little Brother?

hi , been using marshall heads and 4x12 cabs or a good few decades now , bomb proof would describe them to a T , and vox amps (valve) ain't too bad either ,
At the moment i'm using my old jcm 800 from 1981 which i've had for around 20 years with no problems and also a vox ac15c1 i picked up a few years ago , cracking wee amp , but saving for an old ac 30 ( i might even lighten my collection a bit to get one , hope this helps) and don't forget to get some ear plugs if you go for either  , cheers
Alan

I have an Orange (affectionately named "short bus"). While they're a bit basic - not a lot of bells and whistles, if you want a raw almost uncontrolled sound, it's great.
