everyone has different taste when it comes to this. bottom line if your buying to resell later then you need to keep it in nice condition. me... ive never resold a guitar. but i have given some away and the recipients were always happy to get them. mostly because they just could not afford to buy one themself.

so i think it depends on what your long term plans are.

"It’s the guitar equivalent of $300 jeans crafted with holes in the knees, sanded threadbare by a 9-year-old chained to a table in a Mumbai sweat shop."

I agree, but usually don't say it because I wouldn't want to make anyone feel bad about doing the relic thing. Also totally agree that most relics go way overboard.

What happens if we found it like that?

same as the $300 jeans Buxom, if it floats your boat, go for it!

Pay someone to refinish it.

That'll be the next trend, refinishing Squier Strats to make them look like pristine Custom Shop Strats.

Last pair of jeans I bought were $8 from the thrift shop near my house

I mean, the guitar is from 1979, it's all legit wear. It's just someone else's.

I'd personally like to find out who owned it before me, but I've had no luck. I've managed to find a single photo with a guitarist playing a white guitar of some kind, but it's too blurry to make out a definitive headstock shape.

I contacted the photographer, a bunch of local venues, record companies, and just people on the local scene and no one recognizes it. It's actually kind of troubling.

The one calling out that the emperor has no clothes will never be popular.
Expect people to go for the man and not the ball.

I don't blame Fender or Levi's or whoever for selling fake wear items, and there's no accounting for taste. But it will mark you as a wannabe, for better and for worse.
But in my opinion, it's like telling your girlfriend to go see a surgeon to get more wrinkles and sag the breasts.

It's a natural worn thing.

People are telling me to get it refinished because it's not "my wear"

Does it make me a poser/wannabe because I'm not sure what I'm going to do? (aesthetically speaking.)
