Johnny Winter that is... this Thursday night at Famous Dave's Blues Club

And... Guess who's got the Front Row Center Stage table... ??? 8) 8) 8)

Image

Unfortunately, Mrs. LMN leaves tomorrow for the Presidents Cup in Columbus, OH (I'll be joining her there Oct. 5th), so I'm taking one of my best friends who's wife (a physician) will also be away at a Medical Conference.

Bobby is a Bass Player and was absolutely thrilled when I invited him.

He's taken Fri. off and we're taking a Taxi (and Bail money  )... it's gonna be a Dangerous night !!

Lots of pics to follow...

cheers!

Better take ear plugs. Johnny plays a little loud. Last time I saw him when he was playin slide on his thunderbird it was like my head was being sawn in half. But he was great.

That would be a Firebird. A Thunderbird is a bass. :P

No worries, and sorry for the hijack.

This thread is about the man who is easily in my top 5 favorites.
Saw Johnny around 35 years ago at The Swing Auditorium, was literally 10 feet away from him.

Lightnin MN, I hope you enjoy the show as much as I did all those years ago. :)

He can still play. He needs a lot of help on and off stage and he sits while he's playin, but he can still get the job done

I'm truly envious. Johnny's the man. My favorite bluesman.
I don't suppose he'll tour downunder in his twilight years.
Enjoy the show man.

He's still a young kid, compared to some other legends:

I still like Johnny. He's pretty frail and almost blind. He still plays rally well. I plan on seeing him next time he's around. Have fun at the show!

Uh... Yup...

The way the club is laid out, they reserve a small center section as VIP, not enough to justify separate tix I guess.

But, it's only listed as a 325 capacity.

The nice thing is that they really do give you an upgrade. You get to meet the artist and also, they cordone off the area.

Last year, when we saw Edgar Winter (same table), some guy filtered-in from the back of the restaurant right next to us, standing and obstructing views. He put his drink down on our table and said to me: "You don't mind do you..??". Well I mean what are you gonna say? But, I kept thinking, hey guy... we reserved this table and paid $25 more than you for the priveledge of sitting up front ... 'Yea... I DO MIND !!' :x .

Then, without us saying anything, the Bouncer comes up and chases the guy away saying this is a resrved-only section. He says: "It's alright with this guy.." (pointing to me), ther Bouncer says: "Sorry you have to leave.."

I'm not a snob, but over the years, I've had more than my share Festival Seating, pushing and being shoved. I really enjoy being able to sit and concentrate on the show and don't mind paying a little extra for it...

cheers!

Despite being helped to his chair and having his guitar (a custom ‘SG’ type) slung over his shoulder for him, Johnny Winter began his show promptly at 9pm and pounded out his opening number - Johnny B. Goode with the same ferocity as the Two-headed Rattlesnake adorning the brim of his black Stetson !

Belying the years, there was still Fire in his eyes and Magic in his fingers as he worked his way through a 3-hour set including a stint of Rolling Stones, Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf and his own old and new songs.

Image

Image

A consummate player, Johnny didn’t fill time recounting all his accomplishments, people he’s met/played with, or Stories of the Road (all of which alone could have consumed the entire evening) … he just played… and played… and played !

About ¾ of the way through his set, he switched to his fabled Firebird (which looked older, and more road worn, than Johnny himself), and showed the amazing economy of motion his slide work had developed through the years.

At the Meet & Greet backstage after the show, I thanked him for the show and as I shook his hand, he grabbed my wrist ran his palm across my fingers, looked me in the eye, and said: “These have done some pickin’ too…”. Embarrassed, I explained that I started learning just a year ago when I got my Stratocaster… Johnny replied: “If you got these calluses in just a year friend, you’re off to a good start… keep it up !”.

Seeing his brother Edgar last year was one of the best live shows I’d ever seen, but this show will remain in my memory right up until they turn out the lights !

See more pics on the link here

Cheers!

Nice! You'll never forget that!
