Yamaha always made nice acoustics. I still have a 12 string from the 70's. I was originally looking for an Epi Masterbuilt series, but the workmanship and set ups were really horrible. Could have been the usual GC poor climate control. I ended up coming home with a Martin Performing Aritst Series. A bit out of your price range, but they have the same series in a lower end line that play quite well.

For a beginner nylon string classical guitar, Yamaha may possibly be the best value.

There are a lot of different answers and opinions on this subject. I didn't start playing until in my thirties. I lucked out when buying my first acoustic. It was a pawn shop purchase, an Alvarez guitar that had a great tone and decent action and was a good starting platform.
I hear so many parents asking this same question and I tell them all the same thing. Don't go out and buy your kid a $100 discount house guitar. I have seen many kids start playing only to quit after a short time because they were trying to learn on a guitar that had the acoustic qualities of a brick and the action was so high that even Mighty Joe young wouldn't have been able to fret a chord.
Having said that, there are many good buys of used acoustics if a person is willing to shop around as musicians seem to have a severe case of GAS after a while and trade off some really nice stuff.
It would be a good idea to seek the guidance of an experienced musician when buying that first guitar.

Another consideration, and something a few have alluded to, is how acute your ear is. Like a new Stereo which sounds great the first few days, your ear adapts and soon you'll be hearing things (flaws) that you didn't hear in the store or youre first few days of ownership.

A cheap, poor sounding, guitar will very quickly become annoying and discourage you to play it. This is especially true of an accoustic as you won't have any way to 'mask' it such as an EQ, Pedals or Amp controls.

All of it's accoustic flaws, whether it be poor intonation, lack of sustain, fret buzzing, not maintaing proper tune and such will be increasingly amplified by your ear/brain until it's to the point that all you hear are it's flaws. You won't want to play a guitar which sounds poor.

At that point, you'll wish you had either purchased a better guitar, or saved the money until you were able to.

cheers!

A cheap acoustic is a guitarist's worst enemy. It'll make you sound bad.... well.... worse than you really are, anyway. You'll come to hate it and you'll never want to play it. It'll cause you to become frustrated with your learning curve. Depending on just how crappy it is it could even cause some people to give up guitar.

It's like a cheap amp in the electric guitar world.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

i dunno. As a teen, I used to practice with a scarf stuffed in the sound hole. Then I learned the trick of weaving a wool thread around the strings next to the bridge to reduce the sustain without muting.
You can buy rubber gasket silencers, sound bars, metal picks, change the strings to gut strings, and a whole lot of other mods. I've even seen a mini-resonator attached to the sound hole.

There's a few things you can do to find the right acoustic guitar.

I wouldn't go right for the cheapest one anyway but I think you should be willing to spend $200 at least anyway.

This way you are getting an acoustic guitar that sounds good and can last you a few years.

You should be able to find a decent guitar between $200-$500. Here's a few options.

- Fender CD-60S
- Martin LX1E Little Martin
- Yamaha FG800

https://instrumentalglobal.com/how-to-buy-a-guitar-for-beginners/ is an exciting time.

Amazon is always a decent place to check out. Read some reviews and find one that fits your budget.

Guitar Fella also has some brilliant posts recommending and reviewing acoustic guitars.

Hope this helps :)
