Its actually quiet unfortunate that people give rap an consideration at all. The only time rap ever gets any play is when some one like that fool Eminem talks about rapeing women and killing people so you suburban white kids listen to it and think it cool cause the parents hate it. for the most part rap is a very small art form on the global scale generally used now just as a filler in a what they call r&b these days. There are only so many ways you can rap about the cars you drive and your gold chains and bitches, or the fact that your a thug or a G before you are just dismissed as an uneducated and untalented loser.

Perhaps, however some of these losers make many millions of dollars from what they do which is more than most of us will ever achieve through our day jobs or playing In our lifetime. They get paid to do what they love. That I do respect.

Not defending what they do, but as the 'rappers or gangstas' say- haters are gonna hate.

Like I said, as we musicians who take an interest in music, we have to be open to all shapes and forms and accept them, not necessarily like them though.

Look, if someone want to show me rap with a little musicianship, please do. I could give a rats behind about lyrics, I'm interested in the sound of it all.

Elton Motello's "Jet Boy, Jet Girl" / Plastic Bertrand's "Ça plane pour moi" (same song).
Much of Cake and P.I.L.'s music.
But, and I say this with empathy, not William Shatner's interpretation of "Mr. Tambourine Man".

But let me just leave this here:

Well Buxom.... You definitely got some attention on this thread.....

I can enjoy listening to most any form of music.... However Rap is on a minuscule level.
Not because of the lack of musicianship, which in itself is a pointless argument..
Looping sequences, rythmically attaching a rhyming narrative and connecting it all isn't much different than a Pink Floyd's UmmaGumma or Dark Side of The Moon. They are at opposite ends of the musical spectrum but still in a format that moves people...

Here is where I digress in this format....
The nauseating derogatory nature of referring to women as bitches to be subdued and basically used as disposable objects... ( I'm sure there is no need to graphically illustrate )..
The endless glorification of load and lock of yo Glock... followed by the senseless rise to arms chant (rant) of getting even in the hood..... No need for me to further illustrate..

This is for me why this form of urban music is rarely on my turntable ( metaphor ).
Or that is until it joins the majority of music..... Which is about moving people to interact with each other in a pleasant manner, not forming right or left wing assault groups...

Sadly... or perhaps ironically, most of the Rap listeners I see on a daily basis are upwardly mobile suburb-ies cruising around in Bimmers, Merc's and Vag's blasting the latest Rapper tome(ne).
Considering this genre originates from deep urban, destitute street kids who only wanted respect from the rest of the world, blvrd cruising in a $70,000 Uber Whip is ironic to say the least..

There is some that I can listen too.... but those are the one's making a point that is positive not negative.... Unfortunately what sells is the scorched hood genre....

I love hip hop from the 80's to the mid 90's. I like a bit of this and that from then on, but not as much as that era.

I might be in the minority here (no pun intended  ) but I find this to be one of the most interesting discussions on the forum.

There are only so many ways you can sing the blues about a woman.

Yes, but in my experience, then another woman happens.

I have to disagree. Orange County rock does not sound the same as Wayne County motown.

This is a fantastic post!

I think the language and subject matter issue is a shame to be honest, because some of these guys are very talented wordsmiths and can tell a fantastic story. However unfortunately they use headline grabbing lyrics to do so.

Family Business by Kanye is a fantastic little number, strays away from the massive beats and yes he does use slurs in this it's not too extensive and it's a great little tale which people can identify with in different ways. His album "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" is a bit of a masterpiece too. He is by no means up there with the strongest rappers but his production and at times story telling is brilliant. He is however a massive dick

Not so much a reply to your post 53magnatone just something I was going to say anyway.

2 cents- if rap is Ghetto- I live in the suburbs. I can appreciate some of that good old fashion rap. I think rap started in country music anyway- the song about the guy who works in the rich folks yard-- then the fried chicken rap came out now you can get murder and dope and rape and stabbing and all that stuff in those rap songs my people. Not to mention all the trend setting fashions like gold chains with clocks on them and "no runners".Sweet my brethren.
