As long as you say why you think something it's bad, I think it's civil.

It's blanket statements of the type "xxx sucks" (and, on the flip side of the coin, "yyy rocks") without justification or explanation that's just mouthing off.

For what it's worth, I think EmCeeing/rap is a valid performing art form. But I'd call it rhythmic recital and not music, as it usually lacks many of the elements we associate with music, like tonality, harmony, cadence and melody. Sometimes the performance is set to music, but in my view that doesn't make a rapper a musician any more than a riverdancer is.
I wouldn't call a catholic priest who intones latin in thirds a musician either. Performer, yes.

A Rapper is no less a musician than a Drummer.

If a drummer used a single untuned drum, and presented his drumming as the center point of the performance, I'm not sure I would call him a musician. Performer, yes. Arts, yes.

I've heard music defined as "organized sound". For example, if you smack your hand on a table, it's just a sound. If you hit the table over and over again in time, it's a beat. Technically, that could be called music because it is organized. If you watched some traditional tribal performance involving nothing but percussion instruments, would you say it wasn't music?

I do believe rap is music, it's just a different form of music than you may be used to. Don't get me wrong, most rap today is complete and utter bs. Eminem has had a lot of good songs, and there are many lesser known artists like Immortal Technique that are putting out some great stuff. I also think most modern music is crap, except for the stuff that isn't completely mainstream. Rap is no different. Just keep in mind that there is much better material out there than is being shoved in your face. Kanye West and Lil' Wayne for example. Gimme a break

Also, rap isn't all about drugs and violence. Much of it is, but you just have to find what you like. Eminem has some downright inspiring songs, but also some that are pretty... "out there" for lack of a better term. Keep in mind that many (older) rap artists started in an environment where drugs, violence, etc are common. Makes it hard to write music about flowers and sunshine.

Just try not to take sides and say, "I don't like rap" or "I don't like country", because you can't let your opinions be determined by just a few pieces of music. Also, when listening to it, try to listen to the lyrics rather than concentrating on the repetitive beat.

That's my 2 cents.

Everything, even bodily functions, can be turned into music.

To say that rap isn't music is just wrong. Someone is putting a different kind of energy (that most on this forum don't understand) into what they produce.

Would you say that EDM isn't music, just because there's sampling involved with creating it?

Would you say that music isn't music because everyone who has ever written a lyric, picked up an instrument, or sang a note has had some kind of outside influence (other artists) on what they create?

I've been jumped on a playground by a local group of Bloods.

Worst 2:00AM picnic of my life.

Rap is music. You don't pick it up at the hardware store or at a restaurant. It's audio that you can find in the music section of a store that sells music. You can argue it back and forth all day, but it's a fact. OK back to the clever banter.

James, was that weak, lame yet somehow boring vid posted for the slow learners? If that is the group you posted for, prison system forums would be slow learner central command. ( I was going to put the laughing icon end to that sentence then thought that isn't funnny at all :( )
