LL Cool J, Ice T, a couple of Eminem's songs, are cool. As long as there is some strong guitar and isn't so monotonous, unoriginal and uninspiring, like most "rap" is, I can handle a little. But, the stuff that I like isn't the usual garbage called rap. For the most part it is all the same and is lame, whatever you want to call it, by whatever name. < add a drum beat and you have a rap song, feel free to use these original lyrics.

...say you don't like it. Say you think it's crap, say you think it has no value...

OK

Haha,

I don't like it. I think it's crap. It has very little value to me.

These are my personal preferences. If you like it, good! Enjoy!

Truth be known, I don't like opera either.( I know, I know. Please don't start! To me...it just sounds forced and unnatural.)

Now my Strat? Mmmmm!

Peace,
Gridlok

As previously stated, I'm certain it's an Artform... though I'm equally sure it's NOT Music !!

As someone who'se seen more than 21,000 Sunrises, I appreciate Youths' inherent necessity to Rebel against the 'Establishment'... We all certainly did !!

What many of us fail to preceive is that the Beatles, Stones, Who, Zepplin, Springstein, Doors, KISS, Floyd, Dead, etc. have unknowingly morphed to become the Establishment.

I took my nephew of 23 to see Walter Trout one night, and Little Ed & the Blues Imperials the next night. Both gave AMAZING performances.

My Nephew, who had NEVER heard any true LIVE Blues before was transfixed, Reborn. Said he'd never heard anything like it, but that it was ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC !!

As we were driving home the 2nd night, my Nephew comandeered the Radio in the car and tuned in some RAP. I mentioned that I didn't really care for it... that it always seemed so ANGRY to me.

My Nephew replied that this was what he liked about it... it's Anginess... That he was ANGRY and that RAP spoke to him and was the perfect expression of relaying that Angriness.

I asked what he was Angry about... his reply was nothing more than the natural rebellion and impatience of Youth... we've ALL been there!

He conceded that RAP was 'EBONICS' driven, and when I asked would he, in a job situation, say to his Boss " Yo... Dem Hos in Shipping FU'd the order" or "I shud put a Cap in their A**es" he replied "Of course not..."

I'll concede it's an Artform, but there is NO WAY on God's Gray Earth that it conforms to the dictates of Music !!!

If you Love IT, Got to Have IT, Screw Da Man, etc. How WONDERFUL for you !

Just realize that Everytime you buy a CD or Download a RAP Tune, in some way, you're putting a MUSICIAN outta work !!

cheers!

Putting aside the whole is it music argument, this statement really is off the mark.

Plenty of talented musicians are used to make these albums and at the end of the day being a talented musician doesn't give you a god given right to make money.

At the end of the day you need to be making a product people want to buy if you want to make a career out of it, in no other industry would you be paid for creating a product that no body wants to buy anymore and music is the same.

Plenty of people with talent are still making it and they are the people that have moved with the times and pushed to try and do something new at least.

I also fail to see what this has to do with anything? I wouldn't talk to my boss the way the most things are said on Rock and Roll songs or more or less any other song. It's a form of slang that almost everyone uses their own version of and I wouldn't use in a professional environment.

That's probably the worst thing about most rap, it seems to promote the idea of a person having pride in being perceived as stupid, illiterate and racist. The question is; why do people get upset if I sing "Pistol-grip Pump" out-loud? :o

OK... Clearly you're intransigent on this issue.

But, I'm not only talking about Album Royalties here.

How many times do you visit a Bar which has a DJ spinning RAP rather than having/promoting a Live Band?

That's $600 out of some musician's pocket !!

It isn't my mission in Life to cajole, sway or otherwise convince you.

Sometimes you just gotta let it go...

cheers!

Well if we're talking about being transigent on the issue then you are just as much as me, but I am at least giving reasonable explanation as to why I have this opinion (not saying you don't of course!)

I'm not so sure on the bar issue though, the big problem is that the bars will play what draws in the crowds and gets people spending money. Don't get me wrong if much rather listen to a live band but at the end of the day understand that people have a business to run.

I however am very lucky and have many places around me that play rock, jazz and oter genres, I do think it's making a bit of a comeback alongside the lovely vinyl format.

Anyway we will surely go in circles with this, here's hoping you have a great day, or maybe night wherever you may be :D

"intransigent", unfair because Joe understands always and is willing to listen for other points of view. LM you know for sure presentation is everything, look again, edit to shape the thought for a younger perspective, I'm grown up but not old maybe I'll see what you're saying too.

Funny, I was just thinking about the age old question 'is rap music?' This weekend. That depends on what sort of rap we're talking about. But I do think its music.

First thing that pops into my mind is Beastie Boys 'Remote Control' and 'Fight for Your Right'. Perfect example of mixing a band with rap.

Gangsta rap, I'm not into and I don't like listening to bad messages or someone airing out their dirty laundry on a regurgitated beat.. I'm not into rap promoting guns or drugs and violence. But I will admit- I'll probably listen to rock that does, so I'm a self confessed hypocrite

I Like to listen to old hip hop (not to get this confused with modern rap) like Run DMC and Beastie Boys, some newer stuff from Warren G, Naughty by Nature, arrested development etc.. Mainly from the early to mid nineties. They rapped about different things back then. Also scratch DJ's that had real talent back in the day.. Jam Master Jay, jazzy Jeff, Mix Master Mike... These days I just have to say that I'm not into modern rap.

I love how I can create a single thread and rip a forum apart.

Chill, guys. Listen to Music 4 Da Smokerz and relax.

Hardly ripping a forum apart here, we've just had a civil discussion albeit with differing opinions, which can be a rare thing on the Internet!

I don't think putting something down because you don't understand or don't agree with it is very civil.
