But yeah, rap is just a guy talking over a drum machine.

rock is just a guy singing over a blues scale

I've found this argument can be easily settled. If the artist performing the song can't tell you what key it's in or it's time signature, it doesn't qualify as music. There...case closed.

if a person arguing whether the genre "is music" knows fuckall about said genre, they should not be making childish attempts to dismiss and discount the art others have actually put effort and time into.

I mean YEAH THEORY IS THE ONLY ASPECT OF MUSIOC SAMPLING ISN TAEK TELTN ALL THEY DO IS PRESS THE BEAT BUTTON AND TALK FAST OVER IT

A lot of indigenous musicians wouldn't be able to tell you about keys/time signatures etc.

And Buxom, no one who thinks the Beatles lacked talent can be taken seriously in any musical discussion

The Beatles wrote fluff pop songs, then moved into territory others had already explored, but repackaged it to be sold to the pop-consuming masses. They were hardly talentless, but they were not gods.

You had me until you played the race card. Why did you have to do that? The race card is only played when you are losing an argument. By the way, banning gangster rap is not from the Reagan era, late George H W Bush to early Clinton. It was Bill Clinton that told Sister Souljah to put a cork in it.

Anyway, let's all play nice togather. Everyone can like or dislike what they want. We don't have to feel insulted because someone doesn't like what we like, or someone disagrees with us 8)

The race card os very relevant, because it's the issue most grumpy old men have with hip hop, whether they admit it or not. Prod enough with such a person and you will be able to evoke and n-bomb (with a hard "r", said with malicious intent, before anyone oh-so-cleverly declares B-BUT THEY SAY IT IN THE 'MUSIC"!). I have done so a few times, it's a nice way to know who I should never take seriously (the racism, not the musical opinions)

Um, no. You can apply the duck test to a Squier. It passes.

It's rhythm and patter, and falls under the arts. But it's no more music than an auctioneer or dance caller is music. The harmony element is as essential to music as quacking is to a duck. Without it, you may still have sound, but you fail the test. Even if plebs will call a grebe a duck, it isn't. Neither by the test, nor in reality.

yeah this isn't music you're right

Ok, I have a question. If I love Motown, reggae and blues and hate disco and rap, would I still be a racist? 8)

It's the record companies that are racists, segregating genres like R&B and Urban based on people's skin color and not what they play.
Hip-hop, on the other hand, is relatively open - Eminem, Beastie Boys, Kid Rock, Iggy Azalea and Vanilla Ice aren't all that pigmentationally gifted.

I've found that racism exists mainly in the minds of people that accuse others of being racist. However, being a victim of white privilege I may have been indoctrinated to think this way. Ya'll gonna make me loose my mind up in here.

Anyone who does not at least acknowledge the artistic value of ANY form of melodic sounds, rhyme schemes, and instrumentation should not be trusted. Real musicians appreciate all mediums because they have something for everyone - if you desire to look. Hip Hop is just as valid as any of the genres that the demographic here (I'm guessing middle aged white male) listens too. Hip Hop/Rap is not just the mainstream trash you hear on the radio. Just as the crap "rock" music you hear nowadays isn't "true" either. The good stuff is in the underground that only those who desire intelligent lyricism, excellent production, and ground breaking ideas desire to find. This was released in the year 2000.
