I've found this argument can be easily settled. If the artist performing the song can't tell you what key it's in or it's time signature, it doesn't qualify as music. There...case closed.

A lot of indigenous musicians wouldn't be able to tell you about keys/time signatures etc.

And Buxom, no one who thinks the Beatles lacked talent can be taken seriously in any musical discussion

And let's not forget how vulgar rock can be, since the topic of vulgarity has been brought up. (yea, I'm sure it isn't mentioned, but race is an issue most old white guys don't mention for fear of white guilt)

tl;dr: rappers are musicians whether you like it or not.

You had me until you played the race card. Why did you have to do that? The race card is only played when you are losing an argument. By the way, banning gangster rap is not from the Reagan era, late George H W Bush to early Clinton. It was Bill Clinton that told Sister Souljah to put a cork in it.

Anyway, let's all play nice togather. Everyone can like or dislike what they want. We don't have to feel insulted because someone doesn't like what we like, or someone disagrees with us 8)

Someone should start a thread about who is the best guitarist. That'll stop all the arguing.

I never said they weren't music, which is different all together.

Yea, it's kind of blatant that an angry young black man with a voice through song would upset sensitive white men, but that's just me not ignoring facts.

Also, didn't the parental advisory stuff start in 84/85 and just keep getting worse? (for music anyhow) I specifically remember reading up on a W.A.S.P album that caused a lot of controversy with the cover. (It was like a spiky bleeding jockstrap, can't for the life of me remember the name of it) and with the censorship laws, rap took the brunt of it. It was new, it wasn't established, people were trying to uproot it to stop it from "corrupting the youth"

I'm really sorry, but I just don't buy that there isn't some racial bias on most peoples part.

Yea, I'm pretty sure a lot of great guitarists couldn't tell you that either.

I guess that means anyone who doesn't know theory doesn't a music either.

The Scorpions had several of their album covers outright banned before then. Virgin Killer being the prime example. And don't forget Blind Faith (Winwood, Clapton and a couple of others) and their 1969 album that suddenly became controversial in the 1980s. But I guess Clapton is black, eh?

I loathe white hip-hop even more - it's not even anger but pretend-anger.

But regardless of race, to me, it has about the same musical qualities as this:

There's a lot of bull involved.

Winner take all rules.

Kinda old possibly irritated white guys Vs. Somewhat young upset white kid.

It's the battle of the decades!!!

Nope, it was 1985 when Tipper Gore co founded the PMRC and started to slap explicit stickers on anything that may be offensive, not just rap.

Take Eminem for example. Aside from his subject matter, how many of you can spit out lyrics like him without getting into a toungue twister. not many, myself included.

Why do we praise mediocrity these days? Single-syllable rhymes that often don't even rhyme? Since when does "pen" rhyme with "sin"?

People sang more advanced rhymes and tongue twisting lyrics before he was born. Your honor, I bring you Exhibits A and B:

I was hoping for a video of you throwing down some lyrics! LOL!
I bring you Exhibit C:

This appears to be a vicarious rap battle. You gotta bring your own rhymez.

Example:

Generic beat in background/

Yo...Yo...Yo...
My rhymez is so tight,
You just don't know,
When this is over,
You gonna eat crow,
You better hope it don't snow,
Cause that jacket you wearing don't look warm enough...

Like that except better.
