I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised but it certainly made me wonder how many of the real artists that are sampled are even aware.

Nowadays a lot, and the original artists can make a lot of money from it. You can't get away with just using it anymore, and rightly so.

Makes sense. Kinda “Shatters the Illusion of integrity” doesn’ it.

Just kidding. I agree. It’s the artist’s material so their business I suppose.

guitar is the only thing that constitutes music

all rap involves "screaming into the mic"

the only vocal style ever in the history of anything in music is a perfectly clean, white man, suburb-safe croon

Alternate Theory (!!!) : hwy 49 blues has no goddamn clue what he's talking about

Rappers don't scream, they flow lyrically.
Death metal singers scream.

If you want to get technical, most death metal singers growl, while higher pitched screams are usually reserved for black metal, sludge, etc.. 8)

Whether or not you like it, THAT is an opinion. Whether or no it is music, however, has nothing to do with opinion. It is music. That is a fact. You can argue it until you're blue in the face, but you are wrong. It is music.

I'm glad that someone as respected as Jerry Garcia has echoed what I've been saying for years-ever since rap came to be.Rap is more like the beat poetry that was popular on the Greenwich Village scene and in other popular Bohemian areas of major cities in the late 50s and early 60s.A person would recite his poetic compositions to the beat of bongos that were played as he spoke. The fact that they use often pirated and sampled snippets of songs of bona fide musicians still doesn't help classify rap as music because the people who perform it are rarely qualified to be called musicians by any stretch of the imagination.

I don't think you realize just how difficult it is and how much talent it takes to sample a song and make into something completely new and different. By your logic, any (visual) artist that works in the medium of collage is not actually an artist, because they did not create the components of the image themselves.

This also, once again, brings us to the point that not all hip hop uses samples.

As for the beat poetry/"not music" part, see above.

There is a vast difference between a visual artist who creates a collage using photos etc. done by other people and a rapper who takes music written and performed by actual musicians. An artist who arranges a collage is using pieces of existing art works to create another piece of visual artwork that if done tastefully and skillfully is as pleasing to the eye or even more so than the ones that were used in composing the collage.Rappers take songs performed by bona fide musicians and usually create something that's repetitive and monotonous and often offensive, violent and/or obscene.I simply don't like rap for the fact that I find most of it just plain monotonous and repetitive to the point that it becomes very annoying in short order.Combine that with the violence, obscenity and misogyny that proliferates in these "songs" and you have something that has little or no artistic merit and certainly isn't music to my ears.

Mainstream rock deserved to die, it isn't the 1970s any more.

But yeah, rap is just a guy talking over a drum machine.

Its not talking over a drum machine. There is a lyrical groove that weaves with the beat. No different than digging into the pocket when you solo, a rap lyricist needs to do the same thing.
Take Eminem for example. Aside from his subject matter, how many of you can spit out lyrics like him without getting into a toungue twister. not many, myself included.
Its the same with all genres of music, there is good rap and bad rap. Only your ears will decide. Unfortunately, not many ears on this forum can hear what is good about rap.

I went and saw Snoop, Ice Cube, The Game and Too Short last weekend. There were no musicians or musical instruments on stage other than a keyboard during the final act. There was essentially no "live" music being performed.

The vocal acrobatics were impressive, live, and no doubt difficult. I considered it entertaining and the thousands of people in the crowd definitely considered it music.

It may not be proverbial music to your ears, but for every arrangement of sound there is at least one pair of ears with which it resonates.

Sure.

But really, it's a guy talking over a drum machine.

People like to talk it up to being some incredible skill because today's society celebrates talentlessness, even DJs are celebrities when their task involves no more skill than pressing play on a CD player.
