I don't like Rap, I love Blues. So, as much as I hate to admit it, I've felt for a long time that blues and rap have quite a bit in common. I'm not saying they sound alike, just that there's several common threads that run through them.

Indeed, in fact both genres first came from the same kind of place and the earlier forms of rap certainly owe a lot to the blues, however modern rap is more detached from that and has branched off into new areas.

I'm about as open minded as you can get when it comes to music,I can listen to any genre as long as there is a good degree of proficiency with an instrument. This may sound pompous but I can't see how rap can be classified as a music form anyway when a great deal of the "music" they use is samples stolen from the true musicians who recorded it in the first place and that can hardly be construed as original music.I find it too repetitive and actually monotonous and it reminds me of the "beat poetry" that was prevalent in coffee housed in the late 50s and the 60s,where one narrator recited poetry to the beat of bongos-hence the term "beatniks" .I have tried to give it an honest unbiased listen many times but I just have very little tolerance for it and as far as I'm concerned,it just doesn't deserve to be classified as a music form but be regarded as spoken word poetry.

When they named it,they came close to getting it right but they left out the "C" - and I don't mean carp.

To be fair this doesn't make it not music, however the original music is another argument altogether, and a foolish argument for even the most die hard rap fan to take part in because borrowing samples is a massive part of the genre along with adding in their own parts or making a wholly original part.

To me and this is my opinion and I cannot stand rap today however in days of old it wasn't bad but today I don't regard it as music. It has a musical note about it but almost any repetitive noise does also and is not considered music.

I spent a whole day on my boat this summer listening to what my son and his friend wanted to hear. It was an experiment to see what redeeming qualities I could pick out from "music" I didn't understand, and didn't really like. The choices the boys made were all about dealing drugs, racism, money and absolute disrespect for women. The foul language was pretty well constant, (when you could understand the gangster lingo), and there was seldom a musical instrument involved. Way too much negativity for me! It just didn't please my ears.

Pros: Great beat.
Cons: All of the above!

I gave it a shot. Won't be doing that again!

My 2 cents!

Peace,
Gridlok :(

Just as much, if not more negativity, mysoginy, drug use and sexism portrayed in rock and blues music

Ok so from right backin 1930 odd Robert Johnson singing four until late (a woman is like a dresser, some man always running through it's drawers), past the stones excessive drug use portrayal. Into metal glorifying occult practice of the 80's then onto violence in the 90's.

Do you really think more wrong hasn't been done by the rock scene? It's incredibly blinkered if you refuse to accept it.

Y'know, say you don't like it. Say you think it's crap, say you think it has no value.

Don't say it's not artistic expression. Don't say it doesn't count as music. Don't argue that it's bad and talks of bad things. To seemingly bolster your argument. Because those points soon fall to anyone with half a open mind that can look at things objectively. And when the justification police knock at your door. How you gonna put yourself above some rapper who lifts music when all you do is copy riffs?

Lets not have that world. It's $@!&*%.

Yeah, I made the comparison to older rock and blues on the same day as I let myself be assaulted by my sons choice of rap. And I get what you're talking about. "Gonna shoot my ol' lady, cause I found her messing round with another man." :)

But it seems there were more love songs to counter the bad. It didn't seem so powerfully negative. :(

So I have nothing against anyone else liking it. As I said, it just doesn't please my ears.

Peace,
Gridlok

(Plus I think I am a champion for being willing to listen to it for a whole day just so I could be at least a little bit objective.) :D

I know Public Enemy sampled a Slayer lick for one of their songs.

Buxom's back. haha.
I own one rap cd. that's Ice Cube's "predator" that album is awesome. I got into it because of a remix i heard on some late night college radio show once.... I was looking for the remix and never found it, but found out what the samples were from - an Ice Cube song...so I had a friend burn me the cd. yep, im a criminal. whatever. But that cd is pretty amazing. Excessive on bad language? sure. Angry racist lyrics? possibly, if that's how you hear it? Sexist? mm...maybe, but I think most of it is from the viewpoint of a man who's been done wrong by several women... like..most guys. But, you know, there's a time and place for such things. and I don't understand what anyone sees in most of these modern rap guys, but I know a lot of people don't get why I love bands like The Birthday Party. so, yeah. to each their own.
