That was interesting, Mike.

Well, today I tested the Forum at B.B. using my first generation iPhone X, the newer iPhone Xs, iPhone Xs Max, and iPhone Xr. Side by side all phones crashed when going from portrait to landscape in a thread (in this case The Lounge). With the staff and a manager they were surprised to see it, but that's the only reaction I received after I told them that the Apple Store told me to wait for the 12.0.1 update to see if a fix was coming. The fix didn’t happen. I prefer methodical fixes over jumping up and down complaining and yelling like an orangutan.

B.B.’s manager did the old simpleton answer that we’ve all heard before when the tech needs an out without knowing an answer. “Reset the hardware”. In my case the loaded phone. Seriously? I asked them how long it took for them to come up with that cockamamie idea. I politely suggested that they do it for all of their defective display iPhones first. Needless to say I got no bites.

There were no offers to call the provider or Apple either for an alternative solution. They had no problem taking my cash for the cause though. I didn’t bother telling them their job, but I did tell them I had alternatives that were not in their favour should I decide. I told the staff it was not personal, told the manager my next phone and laptop would be bought elsewhere, and so would some others. We shook hands and went on our way.

Long story short, no fix and no return with a big $1k plus bill standing for a new phone with a problem. The Forum works well on the older Apple gear. I have two options left. My phone company and/or Apple Care. The problem is I would have to downgrade since Tim Cook’s future in phones hasn’t kept up with the past. Nice. Pfft! Makes me wonder if I truly need that MacBook or that dealer.

Note: I haven’t been able to reproduce some other non-related site that had a problem. It happened so fast without my catching it to satisfaction, and other than seeing a fault which I can’t specifically recall and describe, I know at least one other example occurred.

I thought I should add that as mentioned before (since the topic is “What's the general consensus here on iOS 12?”) one more mention that iOS 11 plus it’s update worked just fine, at least in my case, whereas iOS 12 with and without it’s update gets a fail mark.

Now ya know.

YMMV and I’d like to know if any others have seen this problem with iPhone and the Forum or other sites.

TIA

FSB

That's a bummer, FSB!

Before this iPhone 6 I had a 4S and used Tapatalk to access and post once
or twice. Now I don't even bother with it. Just talk, text and GPS with a few
pics now and then.

I suspect it's nothing to do with the phone, FSB.
Many websites detect if they are being accessed by a computer or a handheld device and then interact with you differently.
This forum is absolutely 100% one of those kinds of websites.
I have not updated my iOS and my phone hiccups when I try to view this site in landscape.
The phone doesn't actually crash but the browser closes.
As a matter of fact, I remember when that started happening I had not made any changes to my phone but there were some updates to this website.
If memory serves me correctly I think the first time it happened to me was in 2015.
It's been consistent since, regardless of iOS version.
At least for me, anyway.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Thanks, for chiming in Mike and Matt.

I get that the web sites vary and yep, I agree with you. I appreciate the tough job for webmasters to keep up with the ever changing requirements to be met. It’s hard enough to just keep my gear in running order. I built my own website with animation in the past so I know how difficult it can be to work across platforms. Still, there are standards to reach, and I guess that’s the best we can hope for, although all websites cannot be compared. Some are definitely compatible, and some more often than not.

This website, thanks to Brad, serves to be pretty unique, useful, and entertaining. When I took a year (8 hours a day) of formal computer training, we were taught that a website like Amazon was an example to compare with others of it’s kind as to how to and not to build a website. Basically, it came down to getting each component being simple and adaptable compared to fancy dancy and limiting room for improvement and management. Long story short, it just worked while others had that pizazz filled with errors or were restricted. Things have evolved since that time, however, and this Forum has a lot of mileage on it that speaks for it’s popularity. That alone speaks for it’s success. IMHO.

The problem I’m having is not occurring in the majority of Apple gear, but, their flagship phones are sinking to a new level, :P
I’ve been told by one of their employees that I’m not unique to that experience, and others have been plagued with some other issues of concern that I have yet to discover if I do at all.

There is a lot that I don’t use (like intensive gaming or a lot of social media, especially the constantly hacked FB).

I have a collection of classic DOS games and an old PC that plays them. I don’t have it hooked up, but it might be a hoot to do it one day. D0S just works . . . but it’s like riding a model T with rust and I wouldn’t go back. I used to be good at DOS, but it’s been so long, I’m not sure I’ll remember the commands needed to run the games. Hahaha.

Thanks, for your experience with the landscape issue, Matt, and Mike you have a great phone there.

Cheers!
FSB

I just heard that Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen died today at the age of 65.
