Her Wanna, you are a person after my own heart. I do not like "the cloud", I do want to depend on someone else's equipment. Everything you said about the cloud, I have said a hundred times. Smart people will not trust it. I did not go with Apple products, but my MP3 player has every album I own on it, the fact that I can take my whole library with me in my pocket is wonderful. I have a Rhapsody account, but I buy and download the MP3 files. I am not stuck in the past, I see the advantages of the cloud, I like that I can create a song list on my laptop and it will auto-sync with my tablet, but that is about it. All you can do though is what I am doing, watch Ebay for replacement devices at a good price and make sure you do your backups(not cloud backups). Then after the next big solar flare fries the internet we will still be jamming!!

And it's not just that. The Cloud is fine if your life never takes you away from wi-fi. But those of us who travel know the world is full of places where streaming is either expensive, or slow, or not available at all. Then local storage is not merely the most practical, it can sometimes be the only option.

The choice to stream or not is a mixture of personal preference and hard practicality.

Luckily, the Cloud has a silver lining. Past experience suggests that soon after certain gizmos are discontinued their market price shoots up - second-generation Apple TVs, for example. So anyone hurrying to buy an iPod Classic now to hold in reserve might be well advised to buy two or three. By this time next year a BNIB (Brand New In Box) unit could be selling for 50-100% more than you paid for it.

In fact - I might take my own advice on that! :)

Cheers - C

I'm in favour of the cloud. Let me digress, I don't only use it for music, it has its uses far beyond that.

I like the fact that I have direct access to all of my documents that I have made on my desktop, wherever I am with the ipad. It has really helped me with job hunting and keeping notes on hand with all devices. Photos are another one that I use the cloud for- I don't have to worry about syncing them to all my devices, it's all done automatically. Photos that I take are automatically transferred.

As for music- sometimes I listen to my iPod in the car, sometimes I plug my iphone in. But if I don't have that song on my iPhone, no problem. I can download it from iCloud.

Everything I have purchased is backed up. Everything else isn't. But when you do purchase music, you can also burn it to disc. Not like you buy a license to own it, you own it. Just remember that you can't make umpteen copies of it, as that breaches it's copyright protection.

It all works best if you have an iPod to play on, which means you need iTunes.. And if you want to use it to its maximum potential, then you would have a iMac- and if you want to listen to your music on the go, then you need an iPod. That's the apple business model right there  Some have an issue with it, me- not so much. As long as the products work well to my requirements then I'm not worried.

I won't store any of my work on the cloud. I don't trust it or the people who own it. If you think it's safe, it isn't. With all this NSA crap going on, I trust nothing. I don't want my personal records where anyone but myself can see or access it.

There are other devices besides Apple products to store your music on.

I put all my CDs on my Brennan and haven't looked back, and I've more than enough songs on my ipod for when I'm out and about.

As 63supro said, there are many other devices out there that are just as good as the iPod, many of which are better. I personally never understood why so many people dished out 100s of $'s for an iPod, when you could get an mp3 player with twice as much memory for half the price.

As for the cloud, I'll never store anything that I want to keep on the internet. That's just asking for trouble. It seems ridiculous to me that companies like Apple sell people music, and they don't get so much as a file to save on their computer. Really, you're going to pay money for a song that is stored online when you could just listen to it somewhere on the net anyway? There are plenty of websites/apps out there to make a personal playlist and listen to music. Perhaps I'm missing something, but ah well. Doesn't concern me because I live out in the sticks with dial-up anyway

I'll just stick to using my phone.

lol, apple products.

I'll enjoy my expandable memory, longer battery life, replaceable parts, and better cameras. (And that's just scratching the surface of the SIII and SIV)

You know, you can just burn a CD of your music after you purchase it from iTunes. Then you have it in a tangible form. That's what I do.

i will disagree on the Owning the music.... We don't, no matter which format ( vinyl, CD's or files ). We have the right to listen to it and mix it on our devices in any fashion for personal use , but we don't own the music itself unless it was our own compositions....

I'm also not that bothered by the evolution of storage devices.... I certainly wouldn't want to carry around a dozen LP's and a turntable.....
I don't have an I-pod just a 4S I phone and a Macbook Pro.. Perhaps some day I will buy an I-pod, but this is really a small issue..... Speaking of that I have a load of homework to complete for Monday.......

You never will appreciate iCloud if you have had your phone damaged, missing of stolen and found the complete restore option restore absolutely everything right down to the text messages, photos and your alarm settings- not to mention music.

However you really have to ask why the NSA would want to go through your online iCloud accounts in the first place.. Unless you have done something to cause them to, or if they wanted to listen to your playlists lol I'm sure they have bigger fish to chase

Not that I'm pro apple or anything, but the majority of people who use iCloud never fully utilise it properly.

Personally, I've worked with a big telco and I've used android, blackberry, windows and apple devices many times before and regardless of how big the screens and camera resolutions are- the phones are riddled with bugs and extremely vulnerable to malware and hardware faults. Something I'm never going to shell big money for.
