As for Mayer, I am pretty much in the same boat with you. Bonamassa's way out in front of him, but I'm beginning to tire of JB's being everywhere in one's face, every 30 seconds, and getting involved in commercial enterprises which I feel are diluting the impact of what should really be his focus.

I'm not at all certain that it's an either/or proposition...

We may well be passing through a time where there simply isn't a Legendary guitarist in the mix...

cheers!

If they are still being spoken of with reverence 200 years from now, in the same fashion that Mozart and his ilk are in the present, they will have earned the right to be dubbed 'legendary'. Like Robert Johnson, resurrected and canonized long after his untimely passing, they will not be present to bathe in the light of their fame.

Saw the concert when it was screened in the theatres last month. I got the impression that Mayer was in the audience at the time. The question in my mind was as to why it was considered proper to include that footage at all. Even though I tend to agree with Mayer when it comes to Richard's public/stage personna, Clapton should have seen to it that it was cut.

I was reminded of Clapton w/Dylan at MSG years ago. Dylan didn't have the slightest idea what the lyrics were and, if one is familiar with 'Key To The Highway', neither did Richard's for that matter. When one pays that kind of coin for tickets, the artists owe it to their audiences to be prepared, or at least read the prompter, which is usually stage center.

To be fair, I have no issues with what Richard's turns out of the recording studio. I suppose there's a certain amount of 'entertainment factor' in pairing those two 'apple dolls' [Ron and Keith] as Jaggar's bookends, but I would preferred had Mick Taylor continued with the band. When you watch those older concerts, and listen to his guitar work, IMHO the added value is quite obvious.

As for Mayer, I am pretty much in the same boat with you. Way out in front? lol. Is there a race happening? Is it a marathon or a sprint?

I just listened to the live version of "Belief" that's on the "Where the Light Is" live album 37 times in a row. Each time the build build build to the 3rd solo and 3rd solo got more, not less, interesting. On the 37th listen in a row, it actually brought tears to my eyes. What I did is I walked up and down the street bobbing my head like a fool. #epicwinning in that song. I wish I could listen to it 37 more times in a row except I have to do some work now.

This youtube clip through your computer speakers does not do it justice, but anyway:

I used to do that with Chuck Berry's stuff on 45's and a crappy old record player. Then he released his LP's. 'One Dozen Berry's' was the first. However, I was trying to learn guitar solos, not engaged in religious worship.
