I saw Mayer live last night. Outdoor concert, it rained (pretty hard), and 14,000 showed up (and stayed until the end).

His stratwork was nothing short of incredible (IMO). I will no longer entertain any opinions that he's "ordinary" expressed by anyone who has not seen him live. Yeah, it's pentatonic scale, but he has such control. He truly makes it cry. I think there is a reason 14,000 people show up to watch him in the rain (in Mudlick, Florida) about 13 years after he first became a pop star.

I now have a new appreciation for just how bad the sound quality on youtube is. You really cannot be judging artists if you've only seen them on youtube. I thought I knew that, and this was not my first concert by a long shot, but it's *really* bad, even the ones that sound pretty good, compared to seeing a guy like Mayer play live.

Also Mayer was very, very nice/appreciative to the crowd. He basically was very humble and told the crowd he knew that we were at a "very unfashionable event right now."

Good show. I thought the sound quality and playing was so good they could release this show as a DVD.

He played one song with two guitars strapped on--acoustic in front and electric behind his back, and he went back and forth, playing the electric behind his back, and playing the song for real, not just picking a few notes and bending.

He covered Michael Jackson's "Off the Wall" and it was pretty funky. He told the crowd the band had never rehearsed it. They had heard it in some lounge hanging out the other day and he just said "let's play it" right there on the spot. He gushed about his backup singers and band being able to do it.

Also, if anyone cares, he was hitting high notes all night with his voice. He's not Michael Jackson to begin with, but it was not like I've seen on youtube where it seemed like he was singing everything lower and not attempting the high notes.

Cool and thanks for the review!

Which songs did he do from his latest "Paradise Valley"?

Thanks for the review!

Also, for the comment on Mayer's voice quality. I heard a live concert broadcast on satellite radio from near the beginning of his tour and it sounded quite a bit lower than normal as well as limited dynamics in his voice. Maybe that was bad sound quality too, or maybe he's getting his chops back.

My pleasure. He played at a minimum.

1. "Wildfire" (opened the show)
2. "Dear Marie"
4. "Paper Doll" (a more up tempo rocking version than what's on the album)
7. "I Will Be Found (Lost at Sea)"
9. "You're No One 'Til Someone Lets You Down"

Might have been 2 more. I'm not super familiar with the album even though I bought it (but just a few days ago and listened only once).

I need to listen to these to remember if he played one or more of them:

5. "Call Me the Breeze" (JJ Cale cover) JJ Cale (great song on the album IMO...seems like he played it)
10. "Badge and Gun" 3:15
11. "On the Way Home (I think he played this one too)

He did *not* play Vultures or Belief, which sucked from my perspective. He did play other Continuum hits and rocked the hell out of the solos (and intros...extended): I don't trust myself, gravity, waiting on the world to change, and slow dancing in a burning room.

He still does not have the greatest voice but I don't think he ever did. In another humble moment, actually, he said, "I really do want to take you higher. I do." It was endearing. He said "you" and it was a double entendre but he was seemingly referring to his voice. This was during "Off the Wall." But indeed he was singing in falsetto throughout the night including that song. He was also singing/yelling loudly the way men have to sing. In short, he did not appear scared to break anything in his throat or holding back at all, and he was still going strong at the end voicewise. It was a long show too.

Thanks again! Although I'm not a huge fan, I look at what he's accomplished at age 35 with his Fender, Gibson & Martin associations along with his 7 Grammys from 19 Nominations and appreciate the way he treats other musicians with respect and the choices that he's made to get him where he is today along with the many charities that he supports.

He has a proven track record, a great management and PR team and deserves all of the respect and cred which he doesn't always get for one reason or another. He's been on the path to stardom and has planned it out wisely. Approaching his 36th birthday next month, I expect that he will continue to shine brightly as the years go on and maybe not even reach his peak for another 10 years or so.

Not a real fan but, IMHO, he's a better rocker and blues player as opposed to a lot of that 'girly magnet, squishy' stuff which has gone by. Perhaps he should have stayed with the former. He definitely should put his 'cover boy' days behind him for good.

We didn't have rain here in Boca Raton.I guess that was because Bonamassa's business headquarters are about 15 min north of me. Must have sent the weather your way.

Keep an eye on http://www.setlist.fm
It's not there now, but quite a few of his recent shows are listed.
I notice that he really changes up his setlist from show to show.

John Mayer's singing on "Your Body is a Wonderland" still cracks me up. He sounds like Little Nicky. He can jam on guitar though..and it's cool he's showing his phases. I think he's being Jerry Garcia lately, but I could swear the influence ladder he's climbing is based on equipment.

last time I checked that set list website had only 2 songs or am I doing something wrong???

the 2 songs listed are correct. I remember that much.

(by the way I was stone cold sober for concert because I wanted to have energy and fully enjoy it....but I'm not one of those who is really good at remembering everything that was played or even knowing the names of all the songs while they are being played)

the thing that was great about this outdoor concert was the sound quality. I was in the general admission "lawn" seats very far away and the sound was piercing and clear as if I were standing in front of a twin reverb amp. (John uses a combo of fender head and two rock with lots of cabs, of course....he had 6 cabs....not sure if 2X12 or could they be 4X12?...I think he uses six 2X12s

People login and add the songs they remember and hopefully they eventually get it right.
It takes a village.

Lots of people like him... and that's cool... :)

But he wasn't very nice at Crossroads 2013 when EC and Keith Richards took the stage. The Sound guy hit the Kill Switch on his mike, but you didn't have to be a lip-reader to understand what he said. :o

His duet w/ Keith Urban was anything but impressive.

Saw him live in April at JazzFest, but couldn't bear staying the entire set. :(

Can you tell I'm not a Fan.. ??

cheers!

Saw the concert when it was screened in the theatres last month. I got the impression that Mayer was in the audience at the time. The question in my mind was as to why it was considered proper to include that footage at all. Even though I tend to agree with Mayer when it comes to Richard's public/stage personna, Clapton should have seen to it that it was cut.

I was reminded of Clapton w/Dylan at MSG years ago. Dylan didn't have the slightest idea what the lyrics were and, if one is familiar with 'Key To The Highway', neither did Richard's for that matter. When one pays that kind of coin for tickets, the artists owe it to their audiences to be prepared, or at least read the prompter, which is usually stage center.

To be fair, I have no issues with what Richard's turns out of the recording studio. I suppose there's a certain amount of 'entertainment factor' in pairing those two 'apple dolls' [Ron and Keith] as Jaggar's bookends, but I would preferred had Mick Taylor continued with the band. When you watch those older concerts, and listen to his guitar work, IMHO the added value is quite obvious.

As for Mayer, I am pretty much in the same boat with you. Bonamassa's way out in front of him, but I'm beginning to tire of JB's being everywhere in one's face, every 30 seconds, and getting involved in commercial enterprises which I feel are diluting the impact of what should really be his focus.
