Just goes to show what a man with a Stratocaster, some simple chords, and a whole lot of actual talent could do!

RIP Mr. Holley.

Even with the mis-spelling, the world knows whose headstone that is.

Thanks for the memories, Buddy!

Happy Birthday to the man who made black horned rim glasses super cool! "True Love Ways" is a sensational song. It really held up well.

Actually, the spelling 'Holley' is correct.

Buddy was born to Lawrence Odell and Ella Pauline (Drake) Holley.

It was his 1st record contract from Decca Records in February 1956, that misspelled his name as "Holly", which Buddy adopted as his Stage Name.

cheers!

Seems like only yesterday that I was in a local establishment making purchase.
"Did you hear about Buddy Holly???", said I to the proprietor.
"Who is Buddy Holly?", he replied.

...............Never mind :!:
True story.

His lawful name was never "Holley".

Not withstanding any legal changes he might have made to the spelling of his last name when he went professional, I'd give spelling license to the family folks who buried him and created the memorial to his name.

I've often wondered what would have happened if he (and Ritchie Valens) never died in that plane crash. How would their careers have went, especially going into the 60's when music really changed. What direction would have their music have gone? Then again, you could have said this about a lot of other musicians, sadly.

I didn't know about this Holley/Holly business.

Now I suppose I'll find out Iggy Pop is named something else.

That's a question for the ages...

I do find solace in the fact that both (or their loved ones) chose to immortalize the Stratocaster in their respective memorials...

Well... I'm not sure, but IIRC, Buddy married María Elena Santiago under his legal name - Holley.

María Elena, subsequently remarried and divorced w/ 3 kids, is a grandmother, still living, in Dallas, Tx.

She owns the rights to his name, image, trademarks, and other intellectual property.

cheers!

RIP Buddy!

According to Wikipedia, yes. A new plaza was built near the original site and the restored memorial was re-erected there.
