I'm a trained luthier, graduate of Roberto-Venn, worked a little in the industry and now I'm at a university studying Industrial Design with the goal of designing instruments. Does anybody know how I can go about contacting Fender or anybody in the company to see if they are interested in my work? I know they have a career page but there's no where to attach or send a portfolio

I've heard of internships available but it seems mostly what they're interested in is manufacturing efficiency rather than new products.

With the continuing success of the Tele and the Strat these past 60+ years I suspect your chances of getting that job may be slim. I think they've already found their designs and I think they are probably quite happy with them and the success they've enjoyed. You might be better off to post something like this on a Carvin or a BC Rich or an Ibanez forum. Some place where new designs are common.

All the good guitars have *already* been designed.

You might try banjos.

... as is evidenced by the longevity of the old tried and true Fender designs.

Lex, I hope your CV is up to the task of catching Fender's eye.
You'll need a good cover letter too.
Good luck.

Not to be a party pooper, but why don't you try designing and building your own guitars yourself? There's something to be said for the creative freedom that being your own boss allows you to have. There's a growing market out there for boutique gear, with plenty of retail shops carrying that almost exclusively. I can think of several places here in Texas just off the top of my head. You might be better off making a name for yourself on your own. That's just my two cents anyway, you don't have to listen to me if you don't want to. :)

I worked part time for this guy when I was laid off last year for 5 months.

http://www.woodenwizardguitars.com/

I mostly did electronic repairs and mods and he taught me how to dress frets, cut nuts, and basic routing. The economy has hit small custom luthiers very hard. His wife has a very high paying job and he was also planning on taking on another part time job himself. Its a tough market to break into and you might want to try and hook up with a smaller, independent shop to build your creds rather than trying to get into Fender. Personally, I think the only real luthiers at fender are in the Custom Shop and you really need to either be extremely talented or work you way up from the bottom.
