I picked up my new Corsair Bass just a minute ago and the back end of the strap popped off. I heard something hit the ground and picked it up, it was half a screw. The length of it is still inside the body, the head and part of the shaft broke off. I figured the best bet to fixing this issue would be to redrill the body just below the original screw hole. I am inexperienced with woodworking, and need to know if drilling runs the risk of splitting the finish or body. Any tips or words of caution would be appreciated so I can get this thing fixed and get back to playing. Thanks guys!

Drilling should not split the wood although it may chip the finish immediately around the new hole.

If you drill another hole too close the the existing hole then you run the risk of splitting the wood right open, especially with the continual strain of supporting the instrument's weight on a strap.

Really you'd be better off drilling the shaft of the screw out of the wood, plugging and gluing it then re-drilling and fitting a new screw. Once the strap button's back on the repair would be pretty much unnoticeable.

+1

There's no way of getting around it.

That was going to be my suggestion but he said he wasn't very good with wood.

One of the first things I always replace on any new guitar is the strap pegs, with either a Schaller or Grover, the kind that you have to pull out the pin... I may also change the screw to a stainless steel.....

as far as extracting the broken shaft, leave it and drill a new pilot hole North of the broken one a 1/4 inch away... Yourdrill bit should match the screw shaft size, NOT the entire diameter but the diameter of the screw shaft inside of the threads. The threads are designed to bite into the wood You should pretap the new hole with a screw matching the thread size of the strap screws...
Then insert a dab of wood glue, attach the new peg and leave it until tomorrow.....

The other thing I do with a brand new guitar while I'm installing strap locks is to use longer screws. About an inch longer keeps the hole from egging out around the threads if the screw should come loose before I notice it, which had happened on occasion before I started doing it this way. Of course I drill a pilot hole first about a 32'nd smaller than the shaft size to ensure a good solid bite on the threads while still giving the wood some relief from the pressure. Been doing it that way for ages and never had one split.

If its a new guitar - warranty replacement.
It's as simple as that.
