They are GREAT! They make the Strat thru a DRRI sound so ..... Fendery. I didn't think I'd ever switch from Ernie Ball, but these (Note: USA Made) Fender Original Bullets 3150LR are buttah. Not quite as "slinky" as the EB's, but the tone is perfect. There's better sustain, they stay in tune long time, nice round clear tone, I could put 5 springs back on the tremolo and the extra harmonics are back, chime all over the place, and they have lasted with no tone degradation for over 2 months (though I don't really play that often either). Wonder if Fender is actually making them, or are they subbed out (maybe to EB)? Here's where I got them:

And just as impressive have been these picks from Fender. They seem to hit the strings just right, with a nice round note if you want it:

And the new speaker that I installed and love at the moment (note that this seems to change every week or so, the quest continues) is a Weber Ceramic Blue Dog. Finally some mids that stand out.

Cool info. Thanks, Lightnin MN. Missed this on the first go 'round.
Still ................. Wonder where Fender is winding theirs? And does this mean that the upper G-B-E are all just the wire from Mapes?

Off Topic: if you own a piano, have you ever changed the strings?

Well again... Yes...and No...

It's wrong to say that the wires are 'just from Mapes'...

The investment in commercial dies and the associated machinery can run into the tens of millions of dollars. Much more than a single string 'manufacturer' could bear.

That said, it doesn't mean that the composition of the Steel spools used are generic.

The carbon content (as well as other elements) of the steel can be custom ordered.

I cannot ascertain whether Fender uses a 'generic' or a 'custom' carbon steel for their strings.

A 10 Ga. die is a 10 Ga. die, the the process of drawing 'raw' carbon steel through it is pretty much the same no matter what. But that doesn't mean that a company can't vary their finished product through the use of a proprietary steel alloy.

cheers!
