Hey everyone, I'm brand new to this forum and I had a few questions. First of all I've been playing for about 7 years and decided it's finally time to get some decent equipment. I've decided on purchacing a Fender Jazzmaster Classic Player. What I have not decided on is the type of amplification I'll be using. I really would like something that matches this disntinctness of the Classicp Player. I play in a band so the amp needs to be gig worthy. My price range is around 400-800 though i'd be willing to go a little higher. I play things like Title Fight, Balance and Composure, Basement, Seahaven, Tiger's Jaw etc. I also play some post-rock type stuff. I'd like something clean and bright but still able to rip off some depth and let me lay out some punching palm mutes. Thanks guys!!

Congrats! The Jazzmaster is my favorite Fender guitar(for it's sweet tone). I'd look for a good, used Fender all tube combo amp of some kind. $800 should get a you real nice one. Tone heaven.

$800 amp, for the style you mentioned...

I would definitely look at the lower-end Vox AC30 or Vox AC15--the reasonably priced made-in-China tube version with the master volume might do the trick for you, and would be well under that price.

Also, check out the Egnator Tweaker, or if you can add another $100 on your budget, a Rebel 20 (new) or Rebel 30 (used).

Of course, the Hot Rod Deluxe would do fine, if Fender is more your style...

Thanks man!! Is the AC30 worth forking over the extra few hundred bucks instead of getting the AC15? Are Ac15's able to play gigs? I also heard vox's really really amplify every "every little mistake you make" or something like that and I have a very sort of unique style of playing that involves stroking low open strings during a lot of the chord progressions I play and I fear that it will make the chords sound muddy and strange and just plain bad. I'm not sure how to describe it' There are no Vox's Ac's of any kind in my area so i don't have the opportunity to try one out :( Do you know this sort of thing to be true? Are the AC's unforgiving?

I haven't had that experience...I've never owned one, but I borrowed a dead-stock AC15 multiple times for a couple of very loud jams and a couple of gigs, and it performed admirably each time. I had no problem being heard, so volume-wise the AC15 should be ok.

The AC15 I was using was owned by a girl guitarist/singer for a punk band--she was raw-but-precise, and the AC15 sounded great. I never noticed any "unforgiving" amplification of her flaws/errors, at least not any more than any other amp...the same applies for my playing through it (and we had vastly different playing styles/techniques).

I really like those amps, and I have only one negative thing to say about them--they are made in China, and I hate the fact that any dollar I'm tempted to spend might go to the questionable labor conditions that are present in that country.

Go to a guitar store (preferably w/ your new axe) and try them all... They'll let you do that
Then, YOU decide !!

Lightning has the right idea. Grab your guitar. Head to the store and get your amp.

First time I did that with my am std strat I walked out with a hot rod deluxe ltd ed (Jensen speaker). Second time I did that with my am special tele.... Walked out with a Mesa MK 5. Go with what your ears say, and be prepared to pay.

Word of advice, money is money and gear is gear, be prepared to spend twice what you want, try it all and when u hear what you like, buy it. It will save you hundreds in the long run.

You need tubes. Lots of tubes.

Don't let anyone talk you into buying a transistor amp unless you want your guitar to sound like a banjo.

And don't be fooled by flashing lights and built-in digital effects, switch all that off and listen to the inherent sound and tone of the amplifier, first with a clean sound, then a crunch sound then finally with the overdrive switched in.

Check out the Deluxe Reverb, might stretch the budget a tad , but it does the job and you don't need a fork lift to get it in or out of the car.

Yes tubes are great. but listen to your ears. Go with what your ear tell you.

Dan

PS If you think solid state is better, listen again :p

Don't see that kind of honesty around much anymore. Most amps are single input. You can't smack 'em, crack 'em, and share 'em with your friends. Time was, when things were lean, you could run four guitars through one amp.

I remember those days......

Two guitars, a bass, and a singer's mic -- all plugged into a Sears Twin Twelve!

 always used my own amp, sometimes it wasn't the greatest but I was the only one plugged into it, except one time the lead guitar player didn't bring his amp and I let him plug into my super reverb at the Deep End in Park Ridge, Il.. 5 songs into the set a murder occured, it was my super reverb, 2 10's got fried. I haven't done that since.
