Every generation has its signature intoxicants and soporifics. I wonder how many of the current crop of abusers at the same time, extoll the merits of daily exercise of some sort, shop at Whole Foods, eschew all but organically produced comestibles, and refuse to have either themselves or their children vaccinated against communicable diseases for fear of autism :?: :?

It's beyond me why anybody would take those types of drugs.

What is it about 'stupid is as stupid does' that they don't understand?
Just tell some of them that the chemical is a 'soft' agent, and they're off and running on their hedonistic pursuit. It's 'Dr. Feelgood' in pocket-size.

Stick to the green. Worst case scenario is you eat a bag of chips and fall asleep in front of the tv.

....and even that has its long term deleterious, neurological effects.

Nah, worst case scenario is that you continue to pig out and sleep in front of the TV, doing nothing your whole life and end up never amounting to anything you could be proud of. (proud after you've been in a six month sober/straight state that is ... because your perceptions about life WILL change) I totally agree that weed is prolly safer than pretty much any other intoxicant but that doesn't mean it's good for you. It's just less bad for you. I quit toking about 8 or 9 years ago and it was the second best choice I ever made in my entire life. Second only behind getting a divorce from Ruth-less.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I have never taken an illegal drug. Not one puff of marijuana or anything else. No cigarette has ever touched my lips.

When I went to college, I had never drank any alcohol and planned on staying that way. I like to feel healthy and be athletic. Giving in to peer pressure, attending a normal state school, I started drinking. I was never a serious alcoholic, but I have recently decided not to drink *at all*. Ever. Not one sip. It's what I always wanted. I'm going on 3 months of this now and I feel great.

I'm pissed off about the brain cells I killed from age 18-38 when I finally made this decision. Twenty years of drinking, not heavily, but "socially" like most people.

Misery loves company. Losers in society will try to bring others down to their level, because they know in their hearts when they are doing wrong, as opposed to bringing themselves up to your level.

I was called a nerd and made fun of for not drinking as a freshman in college. I actually stuck to it and didn't really drink at all until graduate school.

I should have stuck to my guns. It's an imperfect experiment because it has more than one variable (going from age 20 to 38 is the other variable), but I know for a fact that I was smarter, sharper, and more productive in my 20s than I am now.

(I mention this because the OP's linked article mentions that alcohol kills brain cells.)

Alcohol sucks, and our society sucks for not making it illegal. Before you scoff, yeah I know all about prohibition's failure. Guess what. The vast majority of people do pay attention to law. I grew up knowing (or being told) that stuff like cocaine and heroin are very very very bad. The thought of trying these drugs, therefore, never crossed my mind. Had I grown up knowing that alcohol is illegal just like pot and cocaine are, I would never have drank alcohol, not even one time, and I would now have more brain cells and a sharper mind.

When it comes to abuses of that ilk, there are some who have no fear.
I remember the yo-yo's of the Blackboard Jungle era, standing on the street corners with handkerchiefs soaked in Carbona Cleaning Fluid [carbon tetrachloride] over their faces, 'getting high'. Each to their own poison, I suppose. Ufff!!!

Scary stuff indeed. I hope the women that take these drugs don't ever have children. The world is messed up enough.

As an adult in my mid 20's I've had a lot of exposure to people taking it; it's more popular than most people think. The demographic of which is speak is mainly young adults (teenagers and people in their early 20's - who have yet to move on towards any professional career).

I hope never to touch anything of the sort, especially anything synthesized by some guy who you don't know in a lab. On top of the drug itself being potentially dangerous, the notion to take something that you can't be sure of what it actually is is moronic and unsafe. (How do I know that there aren't other toxic substances contained in this pill?)
