I was not sure exactly where to put this thread so If it is in the wrong place forgive me. Basically I am in the search for a new main axe. However, being on a budget limits what I can spend and that limits in a sense what I can buy. However I'm optimistic and hoping to do good. I have always liked Fender guitars. In searching the used market I have come across a few Fender's that have interested me. First one is a mid-90's MIM Fender Stratocaster, all stock except for a aftermarket Seymour Duncan Hot Rail pickup (I guess technically it is a humbucker) in the bridge position. The guitar is in great shape and the Hot Rail is actually a really nice humbucker. The second are a couple of the 90's reissues of the Fender MIM Duo-Sonic, in great condition and both stock. They sound alright and yes I believe they are short scales. These two are also a curiosity as well as they are discontinued models. And lastly I have also been looking at a few 90's MIM Fender Telecasters, stock and in good condition as well.

Problem is I like all these guitars but can really only afford one at this moment and having a little bit of a problem making my mind up. I hear that happens a lot to a lot of people. I play mostly rock, grunge, punk tones however something with some versatility never hurts which makes me eye the Strat more, however I also know the Tele is not so much simply a "country" guitar necessarily either. Of course I make the final choice, however any opinions from this community could help make the choice a little easier. I did not want this to be another help me choose thread but it kinda is. I guess I am looking for feedback and opinions on the guitars I mentioned.

I fitted a SD Hotrail into a Strat for someone once, I absolutely hated it. So did he. It lasted about 6 weeks before he got rid of it. Not my kind of pickup at all, sure it was high output but the output wasn't worth listening to.

Those 90's Fender are good guitars..but I'm not sure what kind of wood they are made of. I say be safe, and buy a Squier Classic Vibe Stratocaster. They happen to be made of alder(a traditional Fender body wood), and have alnico pickups(also a Fender tradition). The Classic Vibes also look cooler than the MIM's.

Go for the one with the hot rail in it, I think it would be more versatile, so you can cover many genres

I have been eye'ing the Strat honestly but wanted to give the others a fair shake in at least finding out about them. The Hot Rail seems great for Rock and with the other pups it could prove to be a very versatile guitar. The Duo-Sonic's I found are pretty decent if you like the short scale and are are said to be able to get that Tele or Strat sound if you have the right amp backing it. I was more curious about them then anything, I actually like guitars that are different from the norm.

My nephew used a '95 MIM Strat as his main gigging guitar from when he bought it new up until just last year. That Strat sounded so good that other guitarists were constantly coming up to him at gigs and asking him what aftermarket pickups he was using but the guitar was completely stock.

Have you taken a look at any of the Squier Strats,Teles,Jags etc.? A lot of these Squier guitars are incredible and sound fantastic. There are some Squiers with Duncan Designed pickups that are unbelievably great sounding and are under $300 yet sound much better than many guitars that cost hundreds more.If they are within your budget, they are really worth alook.

The 'final analysis' suggestion that usually comes out of our responses to questions like yours is that you really have to sit down and play 'em, preferably through the type of amp you're going to use. and see what feels and sounds best to you given what you intend to play. See, you've been offered two opinions on the Hotrail pickup, yet Fender put one in the bridge position of it's '57VHR Stratocaster, and I don't have any issues with that guitar. Love it. I've four Strats, each with a different personality. Do some hands on research and let us know what you chose.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Well I pulled the trigger on not one, but two Fender Strat's this morning. I picked up the '96 MIM standard with the SD Hot Rail pickup in the bridge I mentioned in my original post, but I also picked up a '99 MIM standard as well which is all stock and in great condition. Could not pass it up because with a SKB hard shell case, strap, whammy bar and a bag of picks included for $250 it was too good to let slide. I am going to try out both and see which I really like the most. Good news is if for whatever reason I don't like one or the other I could probably get my money back out of the '99 or perhaps more. Thanks to those who offered input and also made it a little fun.
