Hi, I'll be getting my strat signed in about a month, right under the bridge, but I am concerned that I'll wipe the marker away, especially because I sweat like Marlon Brando after a Mexican meal.
I was thinking about sanding the part where the signature will go and clearcoating it afterward. Would that dissolve the marker?
And please let me know if you have any other ideas.

I'm almost afraid to feed this thread, but here goes...
first, why are you getting it signed? if it's by a musician you really like and you want their autograph, i'd really suggest getting something more practical signed.. my guess is you're looking to get a cheap squier strat signed and then sell it on ebay as a collectors dream FENDER guitar SIGNED by so and so.... if that's the case, please remove yourself from this forum and don't come back... but if you're really a fanboy/girl and want your own personal guitar signed by so and so, just get a very high quality marker to let them do it with, maybe even a paint pen? yeah, paint pen. that's the ticket. I wouldn't try to clearcoat it, but that's just my opinion. a friend of mine had a 1970 something p bass that was signed on the back by tons of local musicians that the former owner had played with over the years... none of them rubbed off, and i'm thinking they were just done with your typical run of the mill sharpie... uhm.... hope this helps? NOW finish the story. what are you doing?

I want to get it signed by one of my personal idols, Joe Bonamassa, it's for me only.

Good luck with that. He doesn't hang around to sign autographs after his shows.

Maybe buy a pickguard and have him sign that. Then you could either frame it or put it on your guitar.

What did that cost you?

I had Eric Johnson sign the back trem cover of my Strat. I was the only person at the show that got an autograph. Of course, sitting 6 feet away and directly in front of him helped when I jumped up and held it out to him. He started to turn away and walk off then had a change of heart and signed it. I keep it in a zip lock bag and in a box with my other autographs (BB King, Sonny Landreth, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, John McEwen (Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and several others).

I agree with some of the suggestions about having a pick guard/trem cover signed instead. Being that neither of those items are finished, a good sharpie should last a lifetime.

Good luck and enjoy your meet and greet. Let us know how it went.

And paint pen sounds like a great idea. That could be clear coated.

Last week, Joe sat in with a group at a club I go to. Afterward, he hung around the parking lot for about an hour talking to people. He seems to be a pretty good guy. I didn't want to bother him for an autograph. But I have enough respect for him that I'd let him sign one of my guitars if I had the chance.

I had my 50th Ann. Strat and my 2004 MIM Tele both signed on the pickguard by Marty Stuart and the Fabulous Superlatives but I had to take both of them off in order to preserve the autographs.I'd advise you to go the pickguard route too unless you intend to just hang the guitar on a wall.BTW depending on the kind of Clearcoat you use some may react in a negative way with the ink etc. the guard was signed with.

Oh, I know that the clearcoat cat react negatively with the marker pen, so I was going to test it out on a small portion on the back of the strat.

I have clear coated over Sharpie on a pic guard before. A lot of guys wont sign a blank pic guard.

I once had tickets for a Joe Bonamassa show that included a meet-and-greet beforehand. He was completely friendly and chatty and several people had brought things for him to sign, including a guitar and a pickguard. He will treat the request as perfectly normal.

Blekinja, if you want to be sure, take along a marker pen with indelible ink, sold as such in any decent stationers or art shop for the purpose of writing on celluloid. Many pen makers produce them, including Staedler and Faber-Castell, I happen to know. Just ask for an "indelible marker": they'll know what you want and it'll cost a couple of bucks. It won't rub off.

Enjoy the gig.

Cheers - C
