Are you in a rut and need to put the guitar down for an evening? I just watched (twice) a movie newly available on Netflix called "Birdmen: The Original Dream of Flight."

Super cool movie about these guys (and one woman) who base jump off of cliffs using "wing suits" that allow them to glide out twice as far horizontally as they fall vertically and basically they come close to flying. Really really cool shots, including these guys who have gotten so good that they purposely fly close to the ground (always falling, of course, but tracking a mountain side that slopes gradually). The technology got so good that these guys consider jumping out of planes to be too boring because they can literally stay aloft for 10 minutes (and they have total control over where they go too...so the new thing is to fly close to mountains and between barriers and stuff).

The movie is soundtracked by somebody who wrote a bunch of instrumentals just for the movie, which fits the movie perfectly. It's guitar rocked instrumental, nothing fancy but it suits the movie. Gives his website at the end of the movie. There are times in the movie when I literally got chills--the visuals combined with the music are really good.

Really fun movie to watch if you've got a good TV and sound system hooked up to it.

Also chronicles the history of people attempting to fly with the wing suits and a bunch of people who did, in fact, eventually die when they made a mistake.

I'm probably going to make time to watch it again (as movies don't stay on Netflix forever).

Base Flying, is quite exciting, I first saw it a couple years ago when one of our Audizine Forum members posted the vid on A-zine.....
I had been aware of base jumping for quite a few years but until this, didn't know that they had evolved into base flying and worked out the bugs .... So to speak...

A good friend of mine's son is a freestyle / aerial skier, I've skied with them ever since Clayton was like 6-8, now at 21 he is well above and beyond my threshold, actually we knew it was going to be "keep up if you can when he was just 13....
He is out in Boulder and i'm pretty sure with the Film crew he's affiliated with Base jumping is routine.... I'll have to FB him and ask about Base Flying.....

I'd love to do it but time is no longer on my side....

One of the world's top base fliers was killed in a flying mishap this past weekend,he and some friends were doing jumps off a very high cliff-somewhere in Europe I believe-when his suit apparently had a rip develop in a flap or it had failed completely.Anyway the poor guy fell to his death from hundreds of feet in the air.I can't remember any of the particulars as it came on just as I was waking up.

Is this the one who died? This is one of the stars of the movie. Here he is crashing into a mountain (but surviving):

Here's his official vid on his page:

The raw footage without music:

Some say he has said he is suicidal or nearly suicidal so he doesn't quite die on purpose, yet.

Not saying I recommend this; was just saying it's a crazy good movie.
