Up until this weekend I had never done a full setup on any of my guitars. I always took them to a local guy that treated me well, gave me discounts for return business and usually did the setups the same day.
But, I keep all my guitars out ready to play and I keep having buzzing and other problems from changing weather and my constant playing around with different strings and gauges.
Everyone on this forum is always advising guys to get involved with maintaining their guitars. All of the little tidbits of information finally accumulated to the point that I thought I might take things into my own hands. So this weekend I spent a lot of time searching threads, printing instructions, watching youtube videos and putting together the tools.
I ended up doing three full setups, including lowering the nut height on my Tele which was cut too high and causing intonation problems at the first three frets. I couldn't play an open A chord without it sounding sharp.
I was 100% successfull. No more buzzing and great intonation on my Tele. I was going to buy a bunch of nut files from Stew-Mac, but decided to use a small file I had and take my time. I think I didn't breathe for about an hour. I probably wouldn't recommend doing that to someone else.
So since this story had a happy ending, I'm glad I did it. I feel very comfortable with the ins and outs of what makes a good setup.
Seriously though, without everyone's willingness to share their wealth of knowledge on this forum, I wouldn't have had the courage to start cranking on my truss rods and filing a nut. So Thank You :!:

Learning to do your own setup isn't just satisfying, it's a recession beater too!

That is so great! Always satisfying to do your own setups!

I have a nephew and a couple weeks back I went up to visit with my brother and brought my set up bag with me to set up a couple of my nephews guitars. So to make a long story short, I showed him and did one for him, then I had him do one under my supervision...he did just fine. So he did the other couple he had and he really enjoyed doing it. Afterwards he said he couldn't believe he paid others to do this!

Again congrats on doing your homework and coming out on the other end with a new skill!
