Vinyl ..... 24 bit? :| Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you mean, but vinyl is analog - there are no bits until you convert it to digital, at which point it is no longer vinyl.

As far as supporting the artist goes, the actual artist in question put a slug in his head 19 years ago. Of the remaining members, one has sold his soul and seems perfectly content releasing generic, boring radio rawk that makes him assloads of money, and the other just got fat.

The above does not mean the former members of the band and the Cobain family shouldn't benefit from this release. If you were ever in the same position, I think you'd agree.

It's the equivalent of 24-bit when recorded analogue, when it's digital recording pressed to vinyl, it IS 24-bit.

Yes, I'm sure everyone involved would benefit oh-so-greatly from my 50 cents. The only people piracy truly harms are the major labels, and I quite like that. Also, for anyone who listens to a decent amount of music, buying EVERY SINGLE THING simply is not financially viable. I'm talking hundreds of releases per-year. I do buy A LOT of music, hell this past month alone I've dropped at least $150 on vinyl, but it's not even close to all of my music. It just isn't reasonable. And when a release is a ludicrously priced rehash of things I already have, it certainly won't find itself in the "things worth purchasing" pool.

AND EVEN THEN, I go to shows 2-3 times a week, buy merch (ie do things that actually benefit the band), and if they're good, usually pimp their s*** all over the internet, to friends, etc..

A 'bit' is a unit of information expressed as either a 0 or 1 in binary notation. Since vinyl records are not digital, there are no bits present, even if it's a copy of digital media pressed to vinyl. At that point, it becomes inferior to the digital recording since vinyl inevitably introduces noise. So not an equivalent either.

brotherdave - Thanks for mentioning the Sound City documentary. I happened to catch it last night on the Palladia cable network. Really very interesting and the points about sound quality echo Neil Young's issues that he discussed a lot in his autobiography. In fact, Young has a bit of a cameo role discussing exactly that.

It's interesting that Nirvana decided on Sound City for their recordings. The label was dying so who knows why Nirvana used that studio. Worked out well for all I'd guess.
