I heard a cut off Pearl Jam 10 a while back on a classic rock station and it sunk in.

Hey, nearly every band has one good tune in them.

Nearly.

Funny but I don't think I've seen anyone mention Dave Grohl's film "Sound City" on this forum. Nivrana of course made Sound City their home studio. If you are really a Nirvana fan that might be an interesting film for you. I watched it last night. Very well done film. It is on Amazon Prime this month free for Prime members. I can't remember if it is on Netflix or not. I enjoyed it so much I'm thinking of buying it on Blu-Ray.

Besides showcasing Sound City itself, Grohl's flim raises an awful lot of serious issues musicians today need to think about such as:

1. "If recording technology has gotten so much better, cheaper, faster, easier...then why hasn't music actually gotten any better?"

2. "Pro Tools has enabled lots of people with no talent whatsoever to have hit records."

Both those things have been rolling around in my head for a few years too. I was not expecting to see anyone else raise these issues, especially in a movie about the music business. I really thought I was just prejudiced against today's output, but now I know I'm not alone. There's more to this film than just a retrospective of the 70's, 80's and 90's. It is relevant to the arts of both making music and the recording of it. It really got me thinking about the creative process and how it gets stymied in the major label production process. Totally engaging and thought provoking movie.

20 years is nothing at all. A mere speed bump in the road that is life. It goes by faster than you think.

Only way I'd actually pay for this is if the alternate mix AND remaster of the original are handled by Albini and no one else. Otherwise, it's just 3 discs of sh*t I already have and Live N Loud, which I can just download instead of spending $50+ for one disc.

Where can you download it? It's currently been removed from youtube. Youtube has been on a tear removing Nirvana vids lately.

Also when you buy it you get great sound quality.

Also there is a thing called supporting the artist. Big record label and Courtney Crazy I guess but Dave and Krist are still alive plus all the unknown regular people who work in the music industry.

We can't have everything for free. I will buy it and watch and hear it in high def audio and video. Which nobody in history has ever done. Nobody in history other than the insiders who have worked on the project. High def didn't exist when it was originally broadcast (on a square shaped dinosaur TV in 1993), and the bootlegs on youtube are similarly horrible quality, even if supposedly 720 HD. (and they have been removed recently anyway)

There's real HD and then there's computer HD. Has anyone ever noticed that HD on youtube is not really HD? Even the newest most powerful computers....supposed HD stuff is less HD than NON-HD stuff on my real TV.. There's still a difference. Supposedly 720 HD on youtube is not close to actually being in HD or even DVD quality.

Like with the last one, Live at Paramount, it will be cool to see the pro-shot real vid in HD, for the first time.

Looks like my bad. I can't find it in a search. Great movie. Anyone who visits this forum would love it, whether you like Foo Fighters or Nirvana or Dave's brand of music. It's about making real music with instruments and people, recording live, accepting mistakes--being human about. I also just enjoy cool stuff like seeing Dave's personal studio...would be so awesome to have that. And to be Dave Grohl so you can jam with anyone you want, any time. I can't find *anyone* to play drums or bass with me, at all, nor do I have a space where I can turn it up.

I've been slacking at work lately but I figured out I'm not lazy. I work hard at what I'm passionate about. In my early 20s I was passionate about becoming a lawyer, and I did that. Now I figured out I "work" several hours a day--and would be more if I could--writing, recording and producing my amateur youtube videos with my amateurish songs. I spend my days at work thinking about when I get to do that again.

Would be so cool to have made it as a musician and have your own recording studio and your "work" would be making music.

HAH

youtube... that's cute. Someone pirating can get it in the same quality as someone buying it. Besides, if I/you/they wanted true high quality, this wouldn't be coming out on CD, it'd be on super CD or vinyl. CDs are only 16-bit, as opposed to 24 on vinyl or super CD.

As far as supporting the artist goes, the actual artist in question put a slug in his head 19 years ago. Of the remaining members, one has sold his soul and seems perfectly content releasing generic, boring radio rawk that makes him assloads of money, and the other just got fat. The there's the fact that this is coming out on a major label, supporting a decades-old institution of bleeding artists dry to make a quick buck.

The only decent/talented, still-living people involved in this thing are Steve Albini and Novoselic, and you'd do much better supporting Albini by buying a Shellac record or hiring him.

That said, the past-fanboy in me will probably win this one, and I'll pick up the Live & Loud disc(s?) used, for like $10.
