I began working on this almost a year ago... man, how time flies! It was an old Silvertone stereo cab that I ripped all the guts out of. I've been putting it off finishing it for whatever reason, primarily because I didn't have the tools I needed I guess. In any event, I finally bought a jigsaw today as well as some plywood to finish the speaker baffle and partial back. I got everything cut, sanded, and the first coat of paint is drying. Given that the shop is pushing 100 degrees, I imagine it'll dry pretty quick. :) I'm loading one of the Jensen C12k's that used to be in my TRRI... this cab however is going to be used for my Super Champ X2s. I have another custom cab I built for my SCX2 head so I think I'm going to use this one for the SCX2 combo. There's no telling how it'll sound... these radio turned speaker cabs can be pretty heavy on the low end and even border on muddy sounding. It'll be fine for home studio use I guess. I'll keep you posted as it finally comes together.

This is the last one I built... I've posted pics before but here's another look. Cheers. JG

Nice. But I am partial to old license plates.

Jamguy...Nice job, you have a pretty good knack for this! Now you need to make a matching cab for the head unit!

Thanks...

it's easy enough I suppose. Any flea market, junk shop, goodwill, etc have these old stereos kicking around for cheap. Sometimes they need to be re-glued and clamped but you can find decent ones with broken radios/turntables for $30 or so... some are insanely beautiful and cost a fortune but they usually still work. Then all you need is some plywood, a speaker, and a jack...

It's taught me that there's more to making a cabinet than putting a speaker in a box... but that's still all I'm doing. I'd like to try a 2X10... just need to find another old stereo.

If all of our speaker cabinets looked like your first refinish, our wives would probably bug us to get more of them!

Very cool Jamguy, got me thinking when I saw the number plate, how cool would a radiator grill be for on the front of a speaker cab, thinking of the old vintage cars with huge grills, these are hip flasks but how cool would one of these look regular size

Now here is something REALLY cool. I like this refinished cab a LOT. Classy looking, sort of in the mode of one of those Leslie cabs.

I really like this project! Got me thinking about trying something similar, maybe with a built in single ended EL34 amp and a small speaker.

I love the auto theme idea... you could use old molding or body trim, emblems, taillights, grills, etc. 8)

I just got the speaker and baffle mounted and applied what will be the last coat of paint to the rear panel. I just need to let it dry and install it tomorrow after school. I'd love to see pictures of anyones unusual extension cabs if you have one, or hear your other ideas for making one.

Howdy all...

Well, everything is assembled and should be ready for a test drive tomorrow. I'm letting it stay out in the shop for the evening to do a little more off-gassing, the oil based enamel paint stinks to high heaven but makes for a bullet proof finish. I'll try to get a video up soon as well as some pictures.

Cheers, JG

The auto theme idea is a great one. You could also use a dash gauge cluster or a spoke wheel hub cap in place of a speaker grill.

Here she is in action... it definitely sounds best (the video) played through "real" speakers as opposed to just my laptop. The cabinet itself sounds great... much tighter than the previous custom cab I built. I don't know if it's the speaker or the cabinet itself?

This is also the first video I've made using the Alembic Blaster I recently installed... it's a cool little unit! Sorry about the goofy video frame... I'm prone to chopping of my head but have also managed to chop of some guitar in this one too... oops. Anyhow, enjoy.
