So I've been somewhat obsessed with the blue telecaster on the cover of John 5's Art of Malice record for a while now... finally did some research and found out it's a 78 , with the international coulour "maui blue" .... so then i googled maui blue telecaster for sale and came up with THIS at guitarfetish.com http://www.guitarfetish.com/Telecaster-Style-Body-Lightweight-Paulownia-Maui-Blue_p_1264.html

50 bucks? I'm thinking I just found my next project. anyone ever buy bodies from them?
sorry if such questions have been asked before...
also, here's a link to the album cover i'm talking about. thing is beautiful.

Caveat Emptor ....

$50.00 for a body :?: ..... I think not....
Here is the risk..... One it may be routed incorrectly, Two I doubt that finish is flawless. Three.... that company buys in bulk from distressed companies.....
Four.... what is pawlonia super.... If it is indeed of the Pinus species then there are over 100 variations, some are amazingly dense, while other's are extremely soft and porous....

But you get what you pay for..... I would pass ....

Get a preowned MIM, strip it and repaint to match.... Voila... !!
Should be able to find a MIM Tele for about $200-$300...

Well, sometimes... just sometimes... you get a little more than what you pay for. This Strat-style body in Rockabilly Orange came with a beautiful finish, was correctly routed (the loaded pickguard dropped right in) and the neck pocket was snug but not tight. No holes pre-drilled for pickguard, bridge or cord jack, but then they don't know what pickguard you are going to use and with a little care, the other holes are easy to drill on your own. The body is very light, but it holds screws well.

And yes, it came from Guitar Fetish and I was very pleased with it and the subsequent guitar build. I just cannot see paying for a Warmouth or even a Fender body from this site when I could use the same money to buy a complete MIM Strat in near mint condition.

As far as the guitar parts from distressed companies, those parts are clearly labeled and sold on the site (you have to go looking for them) with no shortage of disclaimers and warnings. This body wasn't one of those.

I went and Googled Pawlonia Super, it is an Asian wood, I clicked on a chinese company and read up a bit....
It's growth rate is about 8 feet per annum, which is incredible and does have some positive aspects as far as replenishment. That said I also focused on the fact that this being a softwood, predrilling for screws is unnecessary....
That might be fine for the pickguard but down the line there will be problems with the vintage style 6 screw attachment.... There isn't much wood around the screws in the trem cavity. My fear is that over time they will strip...

So as a replenishable resource I can see how the price is so low.... But that doesn't rule out Alder or Ash, Walnut or Maple or even Rosewood and Mahogany....
Price points are one consideration... but longevity should be the overriding factor.....
Granted Warmoth and other's are super expensive, but there are affordable alternatives, I for myself don't see this wood as viable, especially in an instrument that see's so much wear and tear as a Strat or Tele played night after night in a club....

I would love to see a 5, 10, 15 year old Strat made form this..... I don't see it holding up unless it is just not played..... much ..

I got a message back from the CL lister.... might be trading my eastwood for his tele. we'll see. I agree about not seeing paying 400-500 for a body from warmoth or fender when you could buy a whole guitar for that price and just modify it instead... I think if I do make this trade I'll order one of the GF bodies just to see for myself. for 50 bucks, if it's not functional enough, it'll make some cool wall art. :)

I thought you loved the Eastwood..?
I have a lake placid blue MIM standard tele, and I love it! Switched the pickups to Fender Vintage Noiseless, and replaced the white pickguard with a black one. It's awesome!
Let us know what you decide.

yeah, I do.... but I'm really bad with commitment.... at least with guitars. I dunno, on one hand I'd really love to get the tele but on the other hand I'm afraid I'd regret it.... and my wife will probably shoot me if I make another trade...I was looking at some pictures on my computer of all the guitars I've had...man... I've had probably 30 guitars in the last ten years. and right now I only have 4. the eastwood, my partscaster, and my two old acoustics. I think I have an addictive personality and I need a new guitar fix every few months.... I watched that barter kings show once or twice and decided to put a guitar on CL's barter section about 2 years back... that was an adventure of about 5 different guitar trades. went from an antique acoustic that was FREE to me, left at our old house by previous owners, to a replica p-bass (was mostly squier parts but made to look like the guy's real vintage fender p-bass so he wouldn't have to take it on the road anymore...at least that's the story I was told) , to an 80s squier strat with a maple neck (i've never been a big maple neck fan, but man that thing was nice) , then I sold that for like 150, bought the white squier VM jazzmaster, took it back a few days later and got a surf green squier strat, then got my money back on it and bought the CAR fender strat I traded for the eastwood. damn. thats what I did with the two months I was hurt and out of work. ha...
