Including the ponderous 4 opera Ring Cycle by Richard Wagner, the length of three of which are 5-6 hours [including intermissions], NYC's Metropolitan Opera has used theatres to bring opera to audiences who cannot attend live performance. These broadcasts, both in real time, and in live tape 'encore' presentations, are part of its current offering. They have been providing radio broadcast of operas on Saturdays for the past 65 years of my memory, at least. It seems most appropriate for the Clapton enterprise to take the next step beyond yesterdays 2.5 hour film presentation as select theatres around the country, to move to a real-time presentation, of the ENTIRE concert, in similar venues, for those who cannot be present at the actual venue. There will always be those who will 'squeeze the juice' to be present live and in person. For the rest, what better an opportunity to entertain their world-wide audience. I have no doubt that the revenue side of the deal should make it worthwhile. Perhaps Brad can move this idea to corporate in that Guitar Center seems to have played an integral role in sponsoring this theatre event and the number of Fender guitars on that stage would have made Leo proud.

Actually, Mrs. Lightnin and I were there last night and somewhat underwhelmed.

Obviously, the acts edited into the film were cherry-picked for their contemporariness and celebrity to fuel future DVD sales no doubt.

John Mayer elicited the usual involuntary opening of the mouth, accompanied by slowly breathing inward and then outward. Even Keith Urban (who played killer Tele) couldn't save him. It never ceases to amaze me the number of Mayer Fans unable to distinguish the ability to play vs. the perception of same.

The editing was poor with a full 14 minutes devoted to uban NY scenes rather than musical performance, which presumably is the point of the whole exercise. Guess the fans in Podunk have no feel for Big City Life and need a sample of it.

The Allman Bros. were uninspiring. Not a Vince Gill fan, so his performance was not earth-shattering either.

Robert Cray did a good number as did Sonny Landreth and Geo. Porter Jr. was top-knotch!

Albert Lee was excellent in two numbers, but only as a rythm player. He should have been showcased.

Keith Richards was entertaining, but Clapton just phoned it in and for the first time appeared really old.

I've seen prior Crossroads films and this was by far the worst.

Frankly, wished I'd saved my money.

cheers!

+1. Mrs.E and I thought that Clapton is starting to look a lot like Ned Flanders father.

I can see the cherry picking from your point of view. Perhaps that would be obviated by my suggestion. I wonder did you catch that quick shot of Mayer mouth the word 'a--hole' during the voice over of Richard's acknowledging being introduced by Clapton. :?: I couldn't believe that it made the final cut.

After reading this review I'm wondering about the editing in general. :(

Yep, Mrs. L'MN caught it too and whispered to me: "What the F*ck was that..??"

Mayer's a Looong way from producing a body of work credible enough to make such a statement (and possibly a sign that he never will...). 8)

cheers!

Something obviously happened on stage which provoked that response. I'm just surprised that Clapton and Company, in producing the film, inserted that footage.

Richards isn't noted for his elegant style, artistic gifts notwithstanding. which is why he and Ron Wood make such perfect bookends for Jaggar in performance, looking like two apple dolls at this time in their lives. Mick Taylor was a far better and more creative guitar player than Wood will ever be, but too clean cut, laid back and professional.

IMHO, Mayer missed his calling as player. I like him best when he gets into the blues and into his instrument. Rather than a Dave Matthews/SRV clone, embarassing magazine cover model, and Hollywood celebrity flirt, he should have stuck with his blues chops and made the best of it. A good look at the cross-section of his audience, and that of Bonamassa's explains why JB is the performance and business model success he is, why I've never spoke highly of JM during the entire Tribute guitar project, and why Fender lost Bonamassa.

Woody and Keef..... I was just watching Genesis " Land of confusion " video, the original, those two would fit right in and so would JM....

I was looking forward to seeing a new Crossroads, hoping it would be refreshing...
Sounds like someone forgot to add the plant food to to the vase water....

Did the 4th CGF footage will also come as a DVD?

No DVD released as yet and no way to know if it will contain more footage than the 2.5 hours of film did.

I'm definitely up in the air as to wether or not I would buy the latest Crossroads DVD.
I wasn't particularly thrilled with the last two.....
For me a 50% change in musicians would make the Crossroads much more worthwile...

I think I'd prefer a pay per view Doc, if they can do it with sporting events I'm sure major musical events could get the same coverage, also I've noticed the return of the affro hear and there, imagine having the Jackson Five in the row in front, yep pay per view and my own armchair stocked fridge and nibbles at the ready + pause and rewind, last time I went three hours in a theatre I was praying for the end, I don't give a fig about the Shire one of them Trolls has got to get a lucky shot in soon...puleeeeaaasssee

Their rendition of this famed duckwalker's Sweet Little Rock N' Roller is absolutely amazing - Eric hadn't performed any Chuck Berry song live since the mid 1980s! :)

Was that done at MSG???? Unlike 'Sweet Little Rock and Roller" Richard's "I also don't know the words to this song either' rendition of 'Key to The Highway' did. Poor editing choice, I fear. Seems to me if a performer is going to do justice to a song, the least one could do is know the lyrics in proper order and completely. Earlier in the day I was listen to some Stones and it convinced me more than ever that Richards is best on guitar in the studio where he's clean, well thought out and carefully played. I've never seen him solo well on the live stage. Pity. Berry's original guitar solo is terrific, but tricky to play in parts. The only one I've every heard do justice to it was Dave Edmonds.
