I'm going through a phase of being utterly bored of guitar solos and just enjoying grabbing a handful of Telecaster and hammering out big loud ringing chords all day at ear-splitting volume. Wonderfully therapeutic, even if the neighbours aren't so keen on overhearing.

For this reason I'd like to compile a list of good loud three chord strum-along classics, here's my list so far ...

  • The Byrds, Mr Tambourine Man - classic 12-string open chord hammering with a bit of a riff if you're feeling flash
  • Brendan Croker and the Five O'clock Shadows, Railroad Blues - bit obscure this one but all songs about trains are good for hammering open chords
  • I fought the law - the original or the Clash cover, it's all good
  • Cornershop, Brimful of Asha - the one where you just have to shout FORTY-FIVE every few bars and thrash away at A, D and E
  • Rolling Stones, Get off of my cloud - enough said
  • Anything by The Ramones - but especially The KKK Took My Baby Away
  • Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bad Moon Rising - oh yes
  • The Eurythmics, Thorn In My Side - surprisingly fun to jam along with, nice jangly guitar part with a few breaks to give your ears a rest

All suggestions welcome. The only requirements are minimal chords, fun to play, ideally in a major key, jangly open chords rather than thrashy distortion.

A lot of Talking Heads songs are fun to thrash along with for precisely this reason.

Oh Man, Haven't heard that dude in years. Excellent rendition. Here's another great one, in the vein of this post, from the originator: Georgia Satellites.

Note: there are some "solos" :lol: :

Another fun one (John Mellencamp, Play Guitar):

Great post, GilgaFrank.

One guy PM'd me that he uses that thread to make out setlists for the band he plays with! :shock:

Just listening to it again, that Hindu Love Gods song is so great. The drummer clearly hasn't decided what to do with the ride cymbal and plays it randomly like he's making it up as he goes along. And it's one of those songs where you only need to hear half the verse and you instantly know how to play the entire song.

Was just hammering on that one last week :D
"Louie Louie" has to be the all-time best example;
"Maggie May" was the first song I ever learned to play and sing at the same time so you know it had to be super easy;
In the same vein, the Faces "Ooh La La" is a great song, only two chords;
"Down By The River", or most Neil Young tunes!

Thanks for this list -- it's always nice to have some easy songs to strum along with!

I'll add: Satellite of Love -- Lou Reed
A Horse With No Name -- America
