Forum friends, I'm officially done with welding. at least for now. I've been at it for almost 8 years, and after the last 2 years of back injury problems, not to mention burning myself and breathing galvanized smoke for the last year, I'm over it. Found a new job where I'll be going into wal-mart stores , doing display set ups, inventory, resets, etc.... for the same money I've been making welding. Yep. That's a no-brainer, I'd say. Starting tomorrow. Send me some mojo, please :)
as for my pedalboard and art projects, I do have my own stick welder to do repair jobs and artwork, and the pedalboards are still possible I'll just have to include another friend of mine who still works at my old job with access to aluminum welders... I taught him to weld, and I trust his skill 100 percent with anything I'd put my name on. So... yeah, not completely giving it up, just going to be on my own time for now.

The welding profession has its own specific perils and I doubt that anyone here would fault you for retiring due to the inherent risks.

Good luck moving on. Look at it this way, you will always have welding to fall back on if things get tough, welders seem to always be in demand. Worst case you can pick up a side gig or 2. Anyway, I don't blame you 1 bit. For the nominal amount of mig, and tig I do, I don't blame you from moving away from it full time.

I had to make a career change at the age of 58

loved my old job of 40 years, but due to many changes in recent years, I no longer liked what I was doing.

found something new and less stressful. pay is about the same, but my mind is more at ease.

good luck in your new career

Thanks, everyone. I'm all cleaned up and waiting for the call.... Supposed to be contacted by my new boss sometime this morning to let me know when and where to meet up.... I won't lie, I'm a little nervous... Stepping way outside my comfort zone here, but I know it's the right move right now. Cheers!

Welding can be a lucrative occupation. Not many of us find a way out without sacrificing earning potential. As a fellow former weldor I salute you. When you do your little home projects don't forget to wear your half mask.

Good luck with your new job! Hope it works out great! Also keep your cell phone/camera handy for those "People Of Wal-Mart" shots. Love those. Again, good luck and enjoy the change of pace!
