Eydie Gormé died yesterday in Las Vegas of an undisclosed illness at age 84. Married to Steve Lawrence for 55 years, the two performed often as "Steve & Eydie" becoming a Vegas fixture.

TRIVIA! In the mid 50's Steve met Eydie when they were booked as separate musical acts onto "The Tonight Show" hosted then by Steve Allen. That program was pivotal not only in their romance but also in their career and popularity as they appeared there frequently through the Johnny Carson years.

Eydie went to high school with legendary film director Stanly Kubrick. Her cousin is Neil Sedaka!

Gormé's "Blame It On The Bossa Mova" sold a million copies in the USA in 1963 but would be the end of her smash pop solo hits in English. She sold far more albums singing in Spanish after that worldwide, including her breakthrough Spanish vocal on "Amor." Her Spanish vocals were so emotional you didn't even have to speak Spanish to like them. She continued making Spanish pop recordings the rest of her career.

The TRIVIA I remember best about her. Steve and Eydie conspired to pull one over on the music industry. In numerous talk show interviews Lawrence constantly complained about the state of pop radio and how it was impossible to get a new song by Steve & Eydie played on the radio anymore because radio programmers were prejudiced since they were not exactly hippies. I remember one TONIGHT SHOW appearance with Johnny Carson in particular where he was pretty upset about the radio business in general. Well it wasn't even a year after that in 1979 that a Pop AC single came out on Warner Brothers by an act called "Parker & Penny." The single was titled "Hallelujah" and WB was promoting it pretty strong. It got airplay and started going up the charts. The station where I worked was playing it. It got to about #46 or #47 on the national AC chart when Steve Lawrence appeared on THE TONIGHT SHOW again and announced to everyone's surprise that he and Eydie were actually Parker & Penny and that it was their record and it was getting lots of airplay and how if it had said Steve & Eydie on the label then it would never have gotten any airplay. The he and Eydie sang it.

Steve Lawrence had set out to prove that radio was biased against them. Well if radio wasn't biased before it was for sure after that because that was the last charted single for Steve & Eydie. It really wasn't that bad a record at all and not so different from other pop duo stuff on A/C radio at the time. It had a chance on the A/C charts but once word got out who it really was, it dropped off the charts faster than Milli Vanilli.

Eydie Gormé won a Grammy and an Emmy for her music. You should check out her Spanish language songs, they are really good. I never understood how she could sing Spanish so well until I found out that before her career really took off she was working at the United Nations as an English to Spanish translator. If she had any sort of Spanish in her background that would make more sense to me, but her parents actually were Jewish immigrants with her mother coming from Turkey and her father from Sicily. Still her Spanish vocals are very, very good. I guess it was that work at the U.N. that did it.

Growing up in the '50s and early '60s, Eydie was a staple at our house -- right along side Dinah Shore, Eddie Fisher, Perry Como, Jo Stafford, Tito Puente, and Doris Day.

She sounded great through Dad's hi-fi of the era -- Dual turntable, Fisher pre-amp, dual MacIntosh "40" mono power amps, and Wharfdale Model 12 speakers. All-tube components.

RIP, Ms Gormé

Arjay

I'd forgotten all about Wharfdale speakers. Wow.

Remember them both well.

They were said to be some of the nicest folks in Show Business.

R.I.P. Eydie

RIP. This was a popular song in our home when it came out in 1963. Even now, my wife sometimes blames it on the Bossa Nova.

Thanks for posting - I hadn't heard.

I first knew of Steve and Eydie from their appearances on the Carol Burnett show. I must admit that my younger brother and I used to roll our eyes a bit as we were more in tune with Rock & Roll. However, they were a staple in those days and I realize now that they are one of the threads in my life. I was quite saddened to hear of Eydie's passing.

RIP

Don't know if it's true but I heard once, she could cover 3 octaves with her voice RIP Edie

(Always liked their harmonies in "I just want to stay here and love you")

A medley of some of her Spanish vocals from the old Hollywood Palace TV show. A regular thing at my house it's entire run. I recognize the set. Trio Los Panchos did more with no amps than most bands electrified, amazingly skilled players and singers also. You don't have to speak Spanish to appreciate this music and her wonderful pipes! It is said she was one of the few female vocalists of the modern era who could sing with anyone due to her amazing range and flawless pitch in her prime. That's Ed Wynn who comes out in clown makeup to hug her sniffing back tears at the end of the set. Guess he couldn't help himself.

YES, it was over three full octaves, not counting falsetto.

You're welcome. Her Spanish vocals are astounding. While considered an American singer, she ultimately sold more Spanish language recordings than English.
