This goes back a few years...

A guitar player friend of mine was playing with a band at a local bar. He had called and invited me down to come sit in. I got down in time for the second set, and it was a packed bar, a hot summer night in full swing.

Apparently, the drummer and bassist had some tension going on, and in the middle of a tune, the drummer whipped a stick at the bassist and hit him in the head. The bassist was a big dude, and he shoved me out of the way, ran over to the drummer and punched him square in the eye, knocking him off the stool. There was a huge crash, the band ground to a halt, the crowd of dancers and drinkers stopped, and everyone is looking at the stage.

The drummer is rolling on the floor holding his eye, moaning, "you $@!&, you punched me in the eye" the bassist is glowering down at him, yelling "what'd you throw a stick at me for, man?"
so, the drummer gets up, a huge shiner forming on his eye, and says, "that's it, I'm going home'.

My guitar player friend, a black belt in karate, whose day job is repo-ing cars and bounty hunting, goes up to him and says, "dude, my kid needs shoes and i need this gig, you're staying". He takes off his sunglasses, puts them on the drummer and says', "see, ya look great, ace, now get back on the stool and lets finish this gig". The crowd went nuts, cheering, as the dude got back on his stool, and we tore into "Born to be Wild".

I had an Electra Les Paul copy, Gold color, at the time. Pretty guitar and didn't play bad at all.....but I did.
I bought the Electra at pawn shop in OKC somewhere around 1975. Looked brand new and the case still had the moisture packs in it. The guy wanted $200 and at the time they sold new for $225. I got him down to $175 and then he said the case would be $50 extra.
Okay, now you're getting into my territory. I bought my first Electra LP copy used around 1992 or so. The wife and I were driving along and I saw a pawn shop that had a lot of guitars hanging in the window and I pulled over and stopped. As I started to get out of the truck, my wife said, you had better not come out of there with another guitar! I just gave her my "what are you thinking?" look and went in...

And came back out about 10 minutes later with a black Electra, lawsuit era, complete with original hardshell case. Oh, man, was she ever pissed. Not as bad as she was when I bought two Corvettes in 1990, but she was pissed. I paid $75 for that guitar and the beauty of it is, I still own it today, even play it now and then!

Image

These were pretty good Japanese-made guitars and I played this one on stage for several years. A couple years later I stumbled across a slightly newer (about 1976) Electra in near mint condition and I bought it, too.

Image

I still have the guitars (and one of the Corvettes) and I still have the wife, so I guess all's well that ends well. 8)

Great story Miami Mike. That's a classic.

CRGuitarMan nice looking guitars. If I remember right, those Electra's aren't bad guitars. I remember a couple of guitar players I knew and respected back then that liked mine. Thanks for sharing the pics.

Thinking about that Peavey Pacer amp....didn't Peavey also make a Bandit? If so, the one I had may have been a Bandit. Whichever one was the cheapest....that's the one I had.

WOW! Just looked on ebay and found an Electra LP Goldtop like the one I had...$950.

I bought this tobacco-brown sunburst Les Paul Standard new in February of 1978 (along with a new Fender Twin Reverb amp)......

Image

Here's the same guitar in 2004 (she's had a re-fret by this time, along with a set of Grovers installed)......

Image

And a recent pic from earlier this summer (she's third from the left, in my "Gibson" squad)......

Image

The '78 Twin Reverb also remains a member of the amp herd.

Quality instruments are like firearms or pickups -- take care of them and they'll last a generation or more.

That's awesome, Arjay. I'm looking forward to the day I have a collection half as impressive as yours. :)

Impressive Arjay!

Do you have a favorite?
I sure like the looks of the surf green strat with the maple neck (3rd from the right).

That's akin to asking a mother of sixteen which is her favorite kid.

That's my new hotrod, originally built in 1999. Under the hood, an all-DiMarzio show. At the bridge a DP404 Solo Pro (200mV). In the middle, a DP402 Virtual Vintage Heavy Blues (145mV). For the neck, the DP409 Virtual Vintage Heavy Blues 2 (170mV). The guitar is a real screamer and will be refinished soon in Taos Turquoise.

I see your point. I guess each one is special in it's own way.

I bet that tabbcco burst LP has a few stories in it.

Refinished!!!! But....but.....but....surf green is so cool!

Just kidding. I do hate to see the surf green go, but Taos Turquoise sounds like an interesting color. :)
Of course you'll post some pics when it's done....right :?:

12-string MIJ Strat from 2006. I replaced the stock ceramic pickups with a set of Custom Shop '69s and it does the 'chime' thing pretty credibly. It really makes some of the Tom Petty material stand out nicely.
