Over the past 3 years I've been popping in CD's that I am fairly familiar with, and playing the songs by ear. It may take 2 or 3 tries, but I always get it perfect after about the 3rd listen. Anyone else do this?

I do this a lot. I've got a good feel for song structure, so usually I spend the first time through figuring out what key it's in. After that getting the foundational riffs or chord progression is usually pretty easy. Figuring out the solo, however, is often a different story. Of course, that depends on the song.

Yeah I agree it takes me more time to get the solo's right too.

Sometimes I'll read incorrect tablatures then play the incorrect part by ear.

that does make sense because when you look up tabs online sometimes people write what they think is correct and when you learn it and attempt to play along with the recording you find out that it sounds nothing like the original.

But if you're hearing (using your ears) that the written tab doesn't sound correct, and you correct it (by ear) then you're more than likely learning a lot of said song by ear, with the tabs as a rough guideline.

I learned by playing Beatles albums over and over again till I got it right. Couldn't read music and we didn't have tabs. By ear and learning from friends was the only choice.

I use to find it slow and frustraighting trying to l read tab and music. I started playing by ear and never looked back. Paul Mccartney played by ear for years before learning to read music. I wish now I had payed attention in music class, instead of hiding in the sound proof room playing metalica with by buddy. knowing how to read music is the first step to being a professional musician. ..... :? guess my point is.

having an ear for notes is a gift.
Using your ear well with tab and theory....priceless

agreed. Even if you have a great ear, I think lessons are very important. Makes things easier in the long run, makes you a better player in the long run, prevents you from picking up bad techniques that have to be unlearned 10 years down the road when you find out they are holding you back.

Yup, for the established guitar player, lessons later on in life actually make you worse for a while until you get comfortable with doing things the right way. I have large hands and never keep my thumb under the neck. It's always up and around the neck. I know it makes some things I do harder, but it's just so damn uncomfortable to keep it under the neck and my wrist bent up so my fingers reach straight down to the fretboard, not across.
