Just got back from the Albert Lee concert at a friend's local Jazz Club.

Wonderful show !

From the start when the box office said there was a mix-up on our tix and so placed us at the front row center table w/ Albert playing 3 feet away to the 3 encores he did.

Albert played an Eddy Ball Music Man Albert Lee signature model (but with 3 single coils, not the twin HH that come standard) through a Fender Twin Reverb w/ TC Electronics Nova System Multi-Effects Pedal.

He is a great player, very clean, excellent tone. Amazing what he did with his right hand !

Told lots of great stories when he played w/ Clapton, Emmylou Harris and the Everly Bros.

Also did a couple numbers on keyboard.

One of the best shows we've seen in a long time.

Don't pass up a chance to see him if you wanna see some real guitar skills at work !

cheers!

Awesome Lightnin!

He's amazing and I think he's about 70 now.

One of the unsung heroes. A real journeyman musician with an incredible style we can all learn a great deal from. Dude...that man can play guitar!!! Thanks for sharing and nice to know you had great seats.

I would love to see Albert Lee one of these days. Incredible player and very down to earth from what I've read.

I remember the guitar magazines back in the day, talking about Albert Lee playing with Eric Clapton back in the mid/late 70's and even up into the 80's. In the 70's EC was still a little strung out on drugs and alcohol and not at his peak. As a top notch guitarist, Albert Lee always "saved the day" for EC on stage. An article went on to say that Albert Lee could have easily blown EC right off the stage, but out of kindness for his fellow mate, he supported him, backed him up, covered for him, etc...

Lee's on the Clapton Japan Tour...1980. "Just One Night" is the 2-CD recording.

Musicianship 101

Never show disrespect for a fellow musician.

+1 !

Albert was very respectful of Clapton saying that Eric liked to change up the Band frequently, and that he'd felt fortunate to have survived 2 complete Band changes.

Said he sang on a song for one of Eric's albums which was never released because he felt that Clapton's manager didn't want another singing on the album.

Finally he felt the end was nigh, that he'd already survived longer than anyone else. So he left and hooked up with Don Everly (whom he'd met in '62 in London) in the mid-70s for what was to be one song in the studio, which later turned into an album along w/ a tour to promote it. He said he stayed associated with Phil & Don for more than 25 years.

After hearing him talk of his life, and seeing him play, he is surely one of the most overlooked players in Rock & Roll and Rockabilly.

cheers!

I also asked Albert if he'd played Crossroads this year and he said he had. So, we'll probably see him again next week when we attend the one-night worldwide simulcast.

Sat. night we're seeing Nikki Hill - great young black blues singer !

6 nights later, we're front row center to see Walter Trout ! And the next night, an old friend, Ed Williams - Little Ed & the Blues Imperials.

August is Live Music Month for us to be sure !

cheers!

Actually, George Terry was Clapton's guy from '74 until 1979. 461 Ocean Blvd, Backless, Slowhand, EC Was Here, There's One In Every Crowd. Co-wrote "Lay Down Sally" and a few other EC songs. He's hugely under-rated and criminally obscure -- he played on dozens of people's hit albums.

Albert joined Eric in late '78 through '83.

Sorry for the sidetrack. Albert is a monster player, but he was in Emmy Lou Harris' Hot Band during the mid '70s (where he replaced James Burton). GT is so neglected that I hate to see him forgotten.

Bear in mind that there are players who have made their bones as sidemen. Phil Palmer and Tim Renwick are, for the purpose of this discussion, come to mind and, IMHO, could likely equal Eric in his own milieu.[ YouTube Clapton w/Renwick doing 'Cocaine' in Boston during the 70's. Watch Renwick take it. Or Renwick's solo on 'The Wall-part two..The Pulse tour. I thought is was Gilmour!! Ufff!!]

I don't want to get into that debate herein. What I'm driving at is that, these players are hardly 'forgotten'. They are 'the go to people' in the industry and are well known and respected by their peers for their craft. Think about the composition of the Clapton bands of yore....Ray Cooper, Andy Fairweather Lowe, Steve Ferrone, Steve Gadd, Nathan East, Donald 'Duck' Dunn, Gregg Philinganes, Billy Preston, David Sancious [who is a stormer of a keyboard and guitar player...hear him do second guitar on 'Layla' on the 'One More Car, One More Rider Tour'...].

Consider Waddy Wachtel....Stevie Nicks' main man. Have a shot at that muted staccato guitar riff on "The Edge of Seventeen' and see how long your hand holds out. Not too shabby I'd say....even though slightly beyond the lighted stage. General audiences be damned! We know who they are, and that's what really counts.
