I know the part-time education road very well. My BA and MSEd
were both done while I was employed in a variety of endeavors using a knowledge base and skills which I had acquired and acquiring a constellation of new skills My life in music was an integral part of all of that.

As I relate to Rebecca, life should be a continual learning experience and, as I look back on things, most of what I acquired out of interest and ability came to be called to my service as the years went by, much to my great advantage. Dental school was a different gig, but I worked part-time on weekends and summers calling on many of the same tools I had called on in the past.

Knowing your background as I do, you are doubtless seeing the trends in health care delivery. I should hope one day to see the letters DNP after your name. There's still a long tunnel ahead, but that's the direction you should be head in. My career in health care has taught me that the branches from that 'tree' can be numerous, and lead to a host of fabulous opportunities 'beyond the bed pan'.
[Now there's a potential title for an autobiography :!:  ]

Keep on truck'in, bro. It can only get better.

Well, I finally got to take my placement exam this morning! I tried to last week, but they were full. After cramming four years of high school into literally two weeks, I'm very happy that it's over. In math, I have to take remedial classes. I could've told you that without the test. There were supposed to be geometry and college algebra questions, but the computer gave up on me about thirty minutes into algebra.

In English, I managed to get the highest possible score in writing and was only one point off the highest available score in reading. My essay (which I thought was horrendous) scored right in between the middle and the top. That gives me hope that my un-timed essays will be reasonably good. I was shocked, because I was failing my English practice tests left and right. But a lot of it was just about common sense.

I also talked to the music department chair and got a lot of help with deciding which classes to take. I'm going to be on track for an associates degree and also on track to transfer to a university when the time comes. I can only do part time, but I'll basically be doing 50/50 core and music every semester and it will probably end up taking about two and a half years to complete including summer school. And get this, I have to take private guitar lessons! Oh, the horror. (Yes, that was sarcasm.) And they can be for any style of music, including rock and blues. And I have to listen to music to study... Basically, what I've been doing for the last seven years. :D

Cool update Texas. I had to re-do math, so to speak, when I went to college too. Math is the first thing I forgot every summer, lol.

Hey...nobody rocks Freshman Comp...It's a "C'' course if anything. As for the computer giving up on you.....Ufff!!! So much for modern technology. There used to be a thing called a pencil sharpener. You find them in museums now.

You are so lucky to have discovered your love the guitar when you did. I think you should take classical private lessons just to broaden your horizons.

Good News..... The assessment exam was fun wasn't it... :?
Don't feel too bad about math, I also need to take core electives in English and Math..

I wish the CC I'm attending had Music classes..... It does but it's more in the appreciation vein then anything else....
My advice on the Guitar classes is to plunge into Classical, It is the fundamental for what we all play today. In addition once you transfer to a University, most music degree's require classical studies, so sooner or later you will have to take it... Best sooner while it's still not as demanding as the University requirements.... If you don't already you will learn to read, not Tablature but actual scores and the ability to transpose from one instrument to another will put you miles ahead of your competition.... If you even maybee consider teaching music someday, classical training will again be invaluable and again a requirement..
Professionally, wether it is as a session musician or behind the scenes, a broader musical knowledge will again lead you out front.

Blues, RB, Rock, Jazz is great, but they are only part of the musical wheel, If you look at many of the successful musicians today, the one's with longevity, their schooling was quite structured, even if some won't admit to it.....

Good luck,,,, Keep us posted....

The guy I've been studying with since I was 13 actually has a degree in classical guitar. I never really took an interest in it until about last year at this time, when I bought a nylon string guitar with some of my Battle of the Blues winnings. I quit playing blues and focused on classical for several months after I got back from L.A. I'm really glad I did that, because it helped improve my reading skills by a lot. Of course, a few months isn't going to cut it for college and the school I want to go to (University of North Texas) requires students to be able to play classical and jazz.
