Hmmmm....Could all of these posts be just one single person! All of the dates pretty much align, in the usage of 25, 27 and 28 years! Furthermore, there are striking similarities; like I'm going to college later too and I will miss your playing! Too many coincidences to rule out! Ah ha, they are all the same!

Good move, Rebecca. The next four years could be four of the best years of your life, both socially and intellectually. If you apply yourself as hard as you have applied yourself to playing guitar, then you are certain to be successful.

You may ask about Interdisciplinary studies program. That's what I did back in the 70's at University of Md. Balt. Co. I never followed after graduation and became a Electrician/Rigger because the job presented itself and I enjoy.

I suppose 2 years may feel like an eternity with all you've accomplished so far musically.
waiting until the right moment to do something is what life is about, there are exceptions when now or never but, in general reaching a goal succesfully demands a positive mindset of which you know well already....

I myself, 30 years since high school will be re-entering the academics as of Sept. 3rd.
A different path from your own but there are similarities regardless of age....
I will be studying Internet Technology, Software Graphic Design and ( more ) Languages..... But the 1st couple of semesters should will be more about re-orientation and getting the Math and English up to the required college level... In the assessment test I scored well above for English but Math was just a bit below. Not surprising since I think more in 3 dimensional terms rather than lineal..

If you wish to accept this advice.... Take your time, don't feel like you need to decide where you are heading .... but do take courses that will benefit your interests and have a high chance of paying off later in life...
Do not take classes that do not give you accreditation .... You will find that you'll need to make up those credits later....
I cannot stress strongly enough the advantage of a multilingual capability.
Being fluent in 3 or more languages is a necessity in the global community.
If you are going to study music compositions, you will need French, German, Italian and Spanish. Why languages are not a prerequisite in Junior to High School is a puzzle.
All the other nations we compete against require English to be taught... :?:
Speaking another language landed me work even though other's were more qualified..

Good luck with the studies, think of college as a job, not as a social Get Together.
Being efficient will translate into less time thus less expense....
But also enjoy the challenge..... 8) 8)

Why? music notation has nothing to do with languages. It's all about being able to read the dots and interpret a score what's it got to do with how many languages you can speak? :?

With composition, comes the study of Classical music, much of it is written in European language. Any sheet music for strings or forte-piano is not written in English, more to the point, the funny little words accompanying notes in each bar express how that/those notes should be played. Which is missing from Tablature, even though tab. dates back to medieval times ( since much of the population were illiterate ).
Studying music at the college level demands at the very least familiarity with the languages of Bach, Vivaldi, Strauss, Chopin, Rodrigo and many other composers dating back through Classical, renaissance, Baroque, Medevial....
Not to mention that an accurate transcription of a 200 to 400 year old composition is often full of mistakes.... The ability to read the original, but also any printed article or notes from that composer is a key to a door..
And if there is any desire to be more than just a musician, say in academics, then languages will be a necessity not an option...

Anyway my point was more in the ability to travel worlwide, most successful musicians soon must travel abroad. Being fluent in the language of the country you are visiting allows you a tremendous advantage. You can function as if you were home, instead of continuous puzzlement and frustration at deciphering the culture.
I would add that between, French, English, Italian, German and Spanish, one is able to travel far and wide. English is spoken in just about every country... But it is not that easy to find people willing to respond in english.... It's a political / culture /courtesy etc...etc..
The response one receives from speaking a native language when traveling is quite surprising... Even just attempting to communicate in that language will help tremendously.
People of all nations prefer to be adressed in their own language if at all possible.
It's about manners and courtesy when traveling and being a guest in someone else's home....
College should open your eyes to the world and it's infinite possibilities..
This is why at my mid 50's I'm as giddy as a schoolboy in returning to school.

Two semesters at my local CC then transfer to U-Conn, where i intend to pursue a minor in Music and Art.
I'm about to be single again thus it's time to think once again of the future.... :( :?:

We started foreign language studies in 8th grade in the NYC public school system of 1955. All of the public school systems I have had knowledge of since that time included foreign languages in middle and high school. Has the situation changed greatly unbeknownst to me??

Interesting to learn of your 'change of life'. Rock on and keep us posted.

Not for every school but that is more dependent on funding....
Private schools are still teaching languages, but a lot of public schools have cut, language, art, music and worst of all Phys Ed.

That's OK we'll need Chubby..Mind Numb Zombies for our future welfare....

As far as life ... Yeah I'll keep you all updated.....
Sometimes it's best to move on, at the moment everything is in flux... hence my MIA status.... Thanks Doc....

Schools suck now day most everywhere. Like Doc said we had to take a language in 8th. grade along with pre algebra. I was able to start German in the 7th.grade and skipped the 8th, grade all together and finished German in the 10th. 35 years I am not that good at it anymore but enjoyed it.

We where also able to take College classes while in 12th grade and since still in high school the cost was on the county for such classes. I started courses for Astrobiology.

Currently many kids going to college now learn so much less then we had to both in Jr. and High school because they have been dumbed down for various reasons.

TGS,

I too am going to school this semester. You said you will be a 21 year old Freshman, well I will be a 42 year old Sophomore. I am excited to get things going finally. I have to go slow this semester. In all I have to take Microbiology, and A & P refresher, and a pharmacology course so I can apply for the RN program. I can only take 1 class this semester and hope to take 2 classes in spring. I still have a family to provide for after all. I hope to have my application for the RN program in by January 2015.

Hope all goes well for you...Keep rock'in

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who isn't 18 and going to college! Like I think I said before, I can probably handle things now better than I could then. Now I know what it's like to work in the real world!

I have some awesome news too. I talked to my jazz teacher, and he actually knows the guy in charge of the jazz program at the community college. I desperately need to improve my sight reading skills for when I get to the university level, and I also have never really had experience playing in a jazz ensemble. So anyway, my teacher texted the guy at the college and five minutes later I'm the second chair jazz guitarist in the school! I haven't even met the instructor yet, but I guess it pays off knowing the right people! I didn't think that I would take any music right off the bat, but I'm really exited for it. It definitely will force me to improve and it gives me something to look forward to to help me calm down a little. I really underestimated how freaked out I'd be about going to college. I was more relaxed playing in front of Joe Bonamassa in L.A.!

I'm absolutely going to take Spanish. It's a necessity in Texas, and I really hate not bring able to communicate with customers and students when they only speak Spanish. Usually they can get by with basic phrases in English, and since I know some basic phrases in Spanish I can usually get by with a combination of Spanglish and sign language! Lol I also studied Greek and Latin in Jr High, so I know a lot of root words that make it easier to make an educated guess at what a lot of words mean in Western European languages.

The one thing you're learning fast is that one does not get older, just better. You're also beginning to network into this new discipline of yours which is a plus. I don't have to tell you about contacts and networking. You already know the drill from the music business. Good beginning.

By the way....Joe Bonamassa's company..J&R Adventures headquarters is about a 15 minute drive from where I live. If you want to see an absolutely masterful mix of corporate business and career planning, take a good look at their website. They own everything they do. A business model worth careful consideration. His net worth in 2012 was 4 million dollars and I expect that number to continue to climb.

As RK points out...depending upon one's pursuits, one never stops learning. In my racket, it was a life-long experience both as a student and a teacher in that one's effectiveness at the latter depended upon one's diligence at the former.

I had the same perception as you about a foreign language choice over 50 years ago. I saw writing on the wall. It read: "Llegamos".I studied Spanish for 8 years...8th grade through 3rd year college. The vocabulary and comprehension side of the course work was not as intense as the literary. Almost majored in Romance Languages but needed the credit hours for my science courses. Most of my Spanish learning and utility came on the job across the 36 years I was in practice.
