Well, after a long happy summer the realization that I was going to college only hit me this month. I've already procrastinated about starting college for two years, hence the fact that I am now a 21 year old freshman. I have to take a placement test to find out what classes I need to take (including any remedial, if necessary) and I've put off studied for it until a few days ago. I haven't done any school work at all (besides music) since I graduated high school two years ago. It's amazing how much you can forget in two years.

So far I've torn apart 100 math lessons, 25 practice quizzes, 2 practice essays, and a grammar book. I still have another 200 math lessons, 60 practice quizzes, and as much grammar study and writing of practice essays as I can stand left to go in the next week. If anything, my lesson on waiting until the 11th hour to start studying for something is learned before I even start school. So at that is sort of a good thing.

So anyway, if I don't see as much of you guys for a while. That's what's going on. Now, I have another 23 lessons to go before I let myself go to bed. So I better get back to work!

Managed to go to college, and work two part-time jobs, including weekend music gigs. You don't necessarily have to carry more than the minimum course load to maintain full matriculation which, in most cases, is 12 credits. There is no law which mandates that you complete a college degree in 4 years. I did in seven, because circumstances dictated that I do so. You need to pursue an educational program which is going to lead to a 'day job' which will support you while you pursue your music, until your music carries the load completely, or it appears that it will never. Need more feedback, feel free to PM me.

Good luck...

Best off to get on it and get it done. I was 27 when I finally decided that I needed a decent career.

You're an inspiration to me, Rebecca. I need to go back to school, myself. I'm 28 this year.... after 8 years of welding, I'm ready to do something more white collar. It just gets harder and seems more impossible every year. Good luck!

Great news Texas! You are working at it already, that's a good sign!

orvilleowner, I'm just going to a local community college right now. I'm paying my own way through college, so it's by far the best option financially. It's also been so long since high school that I figured the application would be much easier than going to a regular university.

I'm pretty much 100% sure that I want to major in music composition. That's what my teacher has a degree in, and to me it seems a lot more interesting than just theory alone or music education. Jazz or classical performance would be good, but more limited. And it would probably help if I could play jazz or classical in the first place.

What I don't know is what to minor in. I'm thinking something un-musical related that could possibly help me in music or any other career (like graphic arts, although that dooms you to never making money too, or business/marketing of some kind). I also hate to admit it, but now that I'm reviewing everything from high school, I kind of like creative writing, and math, and actually just about anything. How soon do you have to lock in what your major and minor will be?

You know, I don't think I would've done well if I had gone to school when everyone normally does. When I turned 18, I had only been working for a few months and I really don't think that I had the same level of maturity I do just three years later. I worked hard, but only at the things I wanted to do. Now that I've been working for three years (and working full time this past year), I've seen a lot of opportunities that are only available if you have a degree. It's made me realize why it's important, when I wouldn't have really cared a few years ago.

For instance, I could make double the money doing exactly the same thing (teaching guitar) that I do now at another shop. But they only accept people with a college degree, even though I have three years of experience teaching music, and much longer playing it. Anyway, I guess the reason why I'm bringing this up is that now, after you've been working for eight years, you're probably even more ready for college than I am. If you're thinking about it, go for it! :)

I skipped college and went on the road for 25 years
or so with bands - if I could do it all over again, I'd get the degree.
It's funny how at 19, you don't think much about when
you reach 60-something. Best wishes!

My cousin is in a similar situation as you musically and is majoring in Music Education at Rutger's Univ. Community College is certainly a great beginning. You might consider an Education minor as part of your overall preparation. I know someone in my former profession who began his career at a community college in Ohio and after his A.A.S. went on to Ohio State for his B.S. and then on to Harvard for his D.M.D. and oral surgery specialty training along with a post-doctoral degree [D.Med.Sc.] in medical sciences. He's presently the dean of the dental school I used to teach at. Anything's possible with vision and determination. Brian May, Ph.D.[Astrophysics], is the ultimate 'rock star' in that regard.

21 is nothing, you've plenty of time.

I went to Uni for the first time at 38, and completed a 4 yr F/T course in 4 years P/T, working F/T and with 2 kids. A mature student's experience is different, you don't do any of the social stuff, you're just there to work.

Should have tried to do it 10 years before, because a top 10% finish didn't see a single employer interested in me. I was looking to leverage my experience with my new qualification, but people wanted me to start at the bottom regardless. Couldn't afford that sort of money. At 21 you've nothing to worry about.

Rebecca, I too am in community college, (I have 2 semesters left) and it's definitely the way to go. It's much, much cheaper than a university, and yes it is rasier. People like to make fun of community colleges, but imo it's better, in some ways, than a university. The teachers care more, and there's a lot more personal attention.

As for your major, you don't really need to decide until you go to a uni. If you want to transfer, and you have an idea of what to major in, your associates degree from the cc will go toward that. if you have no idea of what you want to major in, just
take general studies so that when you go to the university, you won't need to take
anything that doesn't directly pertain to
your major.

Good luck, have fun, and most of all, learn
everything you can. After struggling
through school, I've found that the best
way to get a good grade is to find an
interest in every subject. You'll be
learning things you never knew befofe, it's
exciting!

Congratulations on beginning a new journey, texasguitarslinger! I am in a similar situation as you, but 25 and having graduated from the University of Manitoba, Canada with a B.Sc. I start Medical Laboratory Science studies at a local reputable college in less than three weeks.

What I can say is that nevermind what anyone negative has to say, that is, keep your eye on the prize. Most of my close friends are living in community homes with people their age, working just enough to pay the bills and have great times with one another. I can respect the view that the 20's only happen once in life and its important to live it up, but sooner or later if one hasn't yet "made a move" for the future it becomes a more and more difficult hole to dig oneself out of, and I want none of that.

One great benefit to playing electric guitar is that it's an excellent stress reliever, should you find that there is stress with any of your courses. Nothing wrong with keeping a guitar on your lap while grinding away at your notes.
